Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street

This story begins with Benjamin Barker’s arrest by the Judge Turpin, a true figure of evil, who doesn’t think twice in convicting Barker for a crime he didn’t commit.

Sent away of London, he returns with a new facet: Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Until this moment on, his barbershop is scenery to grim assassination- through which the evidences of murder are kept hidden thanks to the help of Mrs. Lovett, the baker. Sweeney vows revenge against the judge.

Goofs

  • Continuity: Toby’s meat pie changes size a couple of times when he is talking to Mrs. Lovett.
  • Continuity: The amount of shaving cream on Turpin’s face changes between shots.
  • Continuity: When dancing in the meat pie shop after deciding what to make the new pies out of, the cleaver Sweeney is holding changes positions behind Mrs. Lovett’s back.
  • Revealing mistakes: Based on the layout of Mrs. Lovett’s Bakery and Sweeney’s shop upstairs, there is no physical way the chute for the bodies could go directly to the basement. The bodies would have to pass through Mrs. Lovett’s bakery. The barber chair is at the picture window, which means the chute would be depositing the bodies in front of the table where Sweeney first ate his meat pie.
  • Continuity: When Todd and Mrs. Lovett go to the Dunstan St. Market to seek out Pirelli, Mrs. Lovett says, “He’s always here Thursdays”. At the end of the scene, Beadle Bamford promises to patronize Todd’s barbershop “before the week is out”. Later, when Todd wonders aloud why the Beadle hasn’t come yet, Mrs. Lovett replies, “Who says the week is out yet? It’s only Tuesday.” (In the script to the stage version, the line is “It’s only Friday”; however, Angela Lansbury says “Tuesday” on the 1979 Broadway cast album.)
  • Continuity: Because of the actress’s real life pregnancy and filming out of order, Mrs. Lovett’s chest size varies greatly throughout the movie.
