The Flock

Friday, October 31st, 2008

The film is somewhat engaging, it deals with a sensitive subject and tries to deal with it in an honest yet confronting matter.

At least, in the beginning.

In the 2nd part of the movie there’s little left of the objectivity in the script.

To summarize, is this movie bad?

No, but it won’t blow you away.

The ideas are interesting but after a while the script feels uninspired and formulaic.

The acting is mediocre and the score is bad.

It’s not really worth seeing but it’ll briefly entertain you.

THE FLOCK is the story of hyper-vigilant federal agent (Gere) who, while training his young female replacement (Danes), must track down a missing girl whom he is convinced is connected to a paroled sex offender he’s investigating.

Loaded

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Loaded was kind of boring at first but once it started to get going it really hooked me.

I know the feeling of being sucked into something dangerous where you feel helpless but to do things that you do not want to do.

Other people have commented on various sites how this movie was silly and implausible but I beg to differ.

These kinds of things do happen, and I’m sorry but not everyone lives in a dream world where nothing bad can happen and crazy situations are “implausible”.

Really sorry but the reality of the world is that they do happen.

The creator of this movie as well as the actors did a great job of portraying how things can just go bad and how people can make really bad choices.

Sometimes things turn out good, sometimes they turn out bad and such is life.

“Loaded” tells the story of Tristan Price (Jesse Metcalfe), a young man who’s about to make his mark on the world.

He’s the son of a well-to-do family with a good reputation, and he’s on his way to law school.

But like so many such settings, things aren’t quite as perfect as they appear.

Puffball

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

The film re-unites Roeg with Donald Sutherland although his role is relatively minor, and Miranda Richardson surpasses herself as an unhinged, tormented soul who craves a fourth child.

Despite some dark themes and darker deeds, humour abounds and Roeg watchers will spot numerous in-jokes and allusions to other works.

There are some uncomfortably tense and gruesome scenes including one nightmarish flight of fancy which almost rivals the climax of ‘Don’t Look Now’ for nerve-shredding tension. :)

As always with Roeg, there are some startling and provocative visual surprises.

Kelly Reily plays a young architect who arrives in a beautiful but remote backwater of Ireland with a dream - to build a spectacular home upon the deserted ruins of a burnt-out cottage.

The cottage carries its own dark, secret history, and when Reilly falls pregnant, the envy of the superstitious, witchcraft-practising locals is aroused and old enmities are stirred.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year

High School Musical 3

The movie starts out well enough with great dance sequences and cute jokes but as the movie goes on it starts to fizzle out.

The dances and sets are amazing but that is to be expected because it is on the big big screen but the acting and plot leaves little to the imagination.

The break out stars have to be Zac and Ashley but I was disappointed that Ashely was not given a bigger role and the movie focused more on Troy and Gabriella.

The plot lacked drama and stayed on one flat line instead of taking the audience on a ride

It’s a good movie but I still think the best on is the original which is the case in most movie franchises.

posterThis is a very good movie, but not the classic it wants to be.

It’s funny and tragic, although not too informative if you’ve read a newspaper with any regularity over the last eight years.

In short, there are no surprises. ;)

Whether you love him or hate him, there is no question that George W. Bush is one of the most controversial public figures in recent memory.

In an unprecedented undertaking, acclaimed director Oliver Stone is bringing the life of our 43rd President to the big screen as only he can.

Saw V

The Saw films have demonstrated an unfeasibly high success rate over time in terms of pulling off twist after twist and having them nearly all hit home.

With this track record, it seems inevitable that there’d be a significant stumble at some point.

They’ve never been bulletproof films (and thrillers are the genre that are hardest to bulletproof), but I’d say Saw V is definitely the stumble.

In spite of this, it still keeps in enough with the series in general for me to be ready for Saw VI in 2009 - which I hope will be better work. :P

Following Jigsaw’s grizzly demise, Mark Hoffman, the final apprentice to the serial killer is reigned a hero.

Agent Strahm is tested and puts the pieces together, Strahm realizes that Hoffman is helping Jigsaw, five seemingly unconnected people face a horrible lesson of teamwork.

Youth Without Youth

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

This is definitely not everyone’s cup of tea and has a pretty good chance of becoming a cult film.

It explores major philosophic subjects from a dialectic angle, which might confuse pedestrians.

In a nutshell: an elderly professor is challenged by his inability to complete his life’s work.

He is struck by lightning and gets the opportunity to observe life from a meta-human POV.

He realizes that intellect, love , morals and reality in general are always ambiguous.

A love story wrapped in a mystery , “Youth Without Youth” stars Tim Roth as Dominic Matei, a professor whose life changes after a cataclysmic incident during the dark years prior to World War II.

Reservation Road

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Astounding.

Impeccably crafted drama.

The story is sad and very serious, but this is one of the most perfect examples of the art of simple dramatic film-making that exists.

This is film storytelling at its pinnacle, on a scale of four stars, this is a five star movie.

On a warm September evening, college professor Ethan Learner, his wife Grace, and their daughter Emma are attending a recital.

Their 10-year-old son Josh is playing cello — as usual.

His younger sister looks up to him, and his parents are proud of their son.

On the way home, they all stop at a gas station on Reservation Road.

There, in one terrible instant, he is taken from them forever.

Kung Fu Panda

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

posterLet me get this out of the way: this movie has some of the greatest 3D animated fight scenes. Ever.

What elevates them from good to great is that while I expected the unbelievable, gravity-defying stunts that are REQUIRED of a good kung fu movie, there is an amazing amount of ‘realism’ to the physics in this movie.

Just watch the jailbreak and you’ll understand.

It’s the story about a lazy, irreverent slacker panda, named Po, who is the biggest fan of Kung Fu around…which doesn’t exactly come in handy while working every day in his family’s noodle shop.

Unexpectedly chosen to fulfill an ancient prophecy, Po’s dreams become reality when he joins the world of Kung Fu and studies alongside his idols.

Red

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Don’t mistake Red for lesser fare such as Death Wish or The Brave One.

While it is constructed around a fairly simple premise that on the surface appears primed to appeal to the base human desire for revenge, the story here is so much more than that, and to give it short shrift and dismiss it as mere manipulative movie making would be to miss out on a story and performance that is a true must see. :)

Red is a 2008 dramatic thriller about a couple of kids who kill a dog named ‘Red’ to amuse themselves.

The owner finds out who they are, and tries to bring them to justice by informing the authorities.
