The Hunt For Eagle One

24 Oct

This is a surprisingly good movie, considering it is basically low budget. It is fairly realistic, too. The weapons sound like the real weapons. The actors act like real Marines and soldiers.

There are some lapses in dialog, though. Some of the things the Marine lieutenant says would not be uttered by a Marine.

Far and away the biggest lapse is Rutger Hauer. He is starting to show his age – unfortunately. Plus, with his long hair a scraggly 3-day-old beard, he looks more like a street person than a Marine Corps General.

That notwithstanding, the military advisers did a much better job than in other movies of this genre. It held my attention, even if it wasn’t Saving Private Ryan.

Not a bad movie overall but lacks some special effects to beef it up

The Plot is at times a little weak, I get the thought – that the production team may have worked on the A-Team (Once you’ve watched the movie you’ll understand) :P

Other reviews say its pretty bad – each to their own :D

enjoy! ;) magic

Take

23 Oct

A great, thought provoking film about the death penalty.

This is a movie that will be extremely difficult for most viewers to watch, yet it is worth it for more than one reason.

The first and foremost to reason to see this film is that it is a visual tour de force.

Every scene looks amazing and the cinematographer constantly fills the screen with something interesting to look at.

The second reason I would say to see this is that its script is pretty intelligent.

While not above some logic flaws and a frustrating beginning, a murder who I felt needed a little more story, the film really does shine when it all comes together.

Felix De La Pena (John Leguizamo) is an armored car driver struggling to make ends meet for his wife Marina (Rosie Perez) and two kids in East LA’s Boyle Heights neighborhood.

Their lives are thrown into chaos after Felix miraculously survives a violent on-the-job hijacking led by Adell Baldwin (Tyrese Gibson), a merciless criminal driven by power and greed.

Tinker Bell

22 Oct

Cast is uniformly excellent, including Lucy Liu, Kristen Chenoweth and Anjelica Houston.

This was much better than some of the theatrically released Disney animated films I’ve seen (notably “Atlantis”), making it among the best of the Mouse’s direct-to-video titles.

Well worth checking out with your kids, but don’t be surprised if you find a tear in your own eye at the conclusion of this fantastic production :P

By the way Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure is being released in 2009.

Enter the magical world of fairies and meet the enchanting creatures of Pixie Hollow, who “nurture nature” and bring about the change of the seasons.

Changing the colors of the leaves, moving a sunbeam to melt snow, waking animals from their winter slumber, or giving a patch of sproutlings a sprinkle of water are all within the realm of these seasonal specialists.

Transsiberian

21 Oct

b

Brad Anderson is probably the best unknown director working today.

He’s the independent Christopher Nolan, often making character-driven, psychologically complex flicks that transcend the trappings of their respective genres.

The movie opens in Moscow, where we see police detective Grinko, Ben Kingsley, investigating a double murder of two gangsters.

A big stash of bad drugs is also missing. Hmmm.

Transsiberian an uncommonly absorbing experience.

One of those legendary train trips that people used to dream about taking, the Transsiberian Express has probably seen better days.

An American couple, Roy (Woody Harrelson) and Jessie (Emily Mortimer), decide to return home the long way from their recent sojourn in Pekin and meet another couple from the West.

Fugitive Pieces

20 Oct

After their breakup, Jakob falls in love with Micheala (Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer), a scholar twenty-five years his junior, and her charm and intelligence allows him to venture out of his shell.

Fugitive Pieces is a quiet and sensitive film that has a poetic quality and though the film often becomes too literary and does not soar dramatically, its message is strong – that though we should never forget a tragedy, there may be a steep price for remembering.

One quote from the movie is that “it is not extraordinary that wood can burn, but that it can float”.

You don’t have to be a descendant of a Holocaust victim to appreciate the very strong message delivered by the movie, that you can either be consumed with the fire of your past life’s horrors or allow yourself to float and survive and thrive.

The Secret Life of Bees

19 Oct

In the midst of the civil rights movement, Rosaleen finds herself in some trouble with the locals, inspiring Lily to flee with her to a South Carolina town that she believes holds the secret to her mother’s past.

In this town, they find refuge with the Boatwright sisters (Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys and Sophie Okonedo), who take them in on the strength of a story concocted by Lily.

Through their cultured world, filled with beekeeping, a lucrative honey business, religious beliefs and love, Lily finds the security she has longed for and finds the answers to questions that haunted her for years.

The film has its flaws. It dragged for a good portion of the first thirty minutes as we watch Lily and Rosaleen mill about, doing mundane things in their pitiful lives.

But then it really picks up when they meet the Boatwright sisters. :)

MAX Payne

18 Oct

mid1

As an adaptation, the Max Payne film is very different from the game in pretty much every aspect besides the tone and the characterizations.

I found it to be the dark and effective thriller that the game was.

A brooding performance from Wahlberg and a matching score only add to the film.

Stunning visuals, engineered by the fictional hallucinogenic drug in the film, in addition to the dark cinematography, steal attention away from the fact that the film’s editing is … eh well :) .

Coming together to solve a series of murders in New York City are a DEA agent (Wahlberg) whose family was slain as part of a conspiracy and an assassin (Kunis) out to avenge her sister’s death.

The duo will be hunted by the police, the mob, and a ruthless corporation.

The Signal

16 Oct

From time to time, I stumble across movies that I know nothing about, and under normal circumstances probably wouldn’t be that inclined to see.

Even though I’m a horror fan, low budget titles like this tend to slip through the net usually simply due to their lack of big name distribution. :P

Let’s hope that with “The Signal” however, this doesn’t happen.

Why? Because this movie is powerful, thoughtful and downright terrifying in its execution. ;)

It’™s New Year’s Eve in the city of Terminus and chaos is this year’€™s resolution.

All forms of communication have been jammed by an enigmatic transmission that preys on fear and desire driving everyone in the city to murder and madness.
