The Skeptic

11 May

What I liked about this movie is that it is very laid-back and down-to-earth in it’s telling.

The way the haunting unfolds in small but creepy events served to make the hair stand up on the back of my neck.

This movie doesn’t rely on over-the-top haunting events, thank God, and that’s what makes it all the more believable.

It’s simple but very eerie, the way a haunted house movie should be.

The characters were all unique and compelling people and the dialogue is witty and intelligent.

Really worth spending 89 minutes of your life on. :)

After the mysterious death of his Aunt, a confirmed skeptic lawyer, Bryan Becket, dismisses reports that her house is haunted and moves in.

Immediately occurrences begin he cannot explain.

Beyond the occurrences there is something about the house which gnaws at Becket – some strange connection he senses he has with the house’s past.

Miss March 2009

10 May

This movie was magic!

It far exceeded what I expected because Trevor Moore is a comedic genius.

This movie puts a new spin on the teen/party movies, and I welcome it with wide open arms.

It is an instant classic with parts reminiscent of “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” and “American Pie” if it were funny.

Sure, there is some potty humor, but very little.

The movie doesn’t take itself very seriously, and it’s great that it doesn’t.

If it did, critics would be slamming it for factual inconsistencies.

It almost seems to make fun of itself.

‘Miss March’ tells the story of a young man (Zach Cregger, The Whitest Kids U’ Know) who awakens from a four-year coma to hear that his once virginal high-school sweetheart (Raquel Alessi) has since become a naked centerfold in Playboy Magazine.

He and his sex-crazed best friend (Trevor Moore, The Whitest Kids U’ Know) decide to take a cross- country road trip in order to crash a party at the magazine’s legendary headquarters and win back the girl.

The Mysteries Of Pittsburgh

09 May

Based on the novel by Michael Chabon, The Mysteries of Pittsburgh is about the young son of a notorious gangster who spends his last teenage summer roaming around with two friends.

The year is 1983, and young Art Bechstein (Jon Foster) is at a crossroads.

Completely opposed to his father’s lifestyle, Art plans to become a stockbroker.

A simple yet intriguing plot, and a quiet celebration of the hidden delights (the “mysteries,” if you will) of a small city.

Thurber, who also wrote the screenplay, takes huge liberties in reworking the source material–the story of Art Bechstein (Jon Foster), the son of a known gangster, and his conflicting love for two of his bohemian friends.

Next Day Air

08 May

This is a funny movie about a package shipping company and the things we think they do to our packages before we get them, such as opening packages and taking watches or other items out, and throwing packages around in the truck before they are delivered to us.

The real companies try not to do these things, or they would be out of business.

But it is a lot of fun watching some of the things they do in this movie.

Mike Epps and Wood Harris are just great as two inept criminals.

The bank robbery at the beginning of the movie should win the stupidest criminal award this year.

The movie is a little slow at the beginning, but it picks up by the end.

There is a moral to the story… we’ll let you work that one out :D .

A courier (Donald Faison) accidentally brings smalltime hoods, Brody (Mike Epps) and Guch (Wood Harris), a box containing 10 kilos of cocaine meant for their next-door neighbors.

Brody and Guch immediately arrange to sell the cocaine to Brody’s drug dealer cousin (Omari Hardwick).

The intended recipients of the package, wannabe gangster Jesus (Cisco Reyes) and his girlfriend (Yasmin Deliz), realize the box hasn’t arrived and set out to find it before drug kingpin Bodega Diablo (Emilio Rivera) notices it’s missing.

Star Trek (2009)

07 May

There was no way that this reboot was going to avoid all references to either the original series of Star Trek or the other spin-off series – anyone going in to see this film had to accept that as a given.

But any cheesy bits (of which there were relatively few) are blown away by the sheer beauty and bravado of this film. :)

I was a fairly big Trekkie in my youth, but in the last 10 years only really kept up with it by watching a few new episodes here and there and seeing the big screen outings.

Abrams’ vision here has me thinking the new franchise will be even better than what has come before. ooohh yeeahh!

A chronicle of the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members.

Star Trek is a 2009 science fiction film directed by J. J. Abrams, written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, and produced by Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk.

It is the eleventh film based on the Star Trek franchise and features the main characters of the original Star Trek series, who are portrayed by a new cast, though the film introduces an alternate timeline differing from the original series.

Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past

06 May

The film started out a little slowly but began to move well.

There was really good chemistry between the two main characters.

The film used Dickens as a clever vehicle for its plot and it worked for me anyway.

I am not saying the film is a classic but it was a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours and I definitely would recommend it folks.

The acting was terrific and the characters were well developed.

I think the film is definitely worth seeing.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is a 2009 American romantic comedy film that has a plot based on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Mark Waters directed a script by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore.

Filming spanned February 19, 2008 to July 2008 in Boston, Massachusetts with stars Matthew McConaughey, Emma Stone and Jennifer Garner.

Fast and Furious 4

05 May

The movie does an excellent job of keeping you on the edge of your seat, there’s no shortage of action and a story that keeps your attention.

The movie starts out in the DR with Vin Diesel pulling off a fairly implausible heist of hijacking a fuel tanker with his new crew.

Minutes later, we learn of Letty’s murder which in turn basically sets the tone for the rest of the movie as Diesel sets off on an all out rampage to even the score.

Like the previous three, you certainly need to suspend your disbelief for the duration of the movie, they didn’t go overboard and kept the special effects and CGI to what seemed like a happy minimum.

Driven To Kill

04 May

“Driven to Kill” (originally, and more appropriately, titled “Ruslan”) is one of the best Steven Seagal flicks in a long time.

It would take a few million dollars, a lot of retakes and a car chase or two to make this into a theatrical action-exploitation flick along the lines of “Taken,” but for a DTV movie Driven to Kill is actually quite exceptional.

As for a Seagal DTV this is up there with Urban Justice and better than Pistol Whipped. It reminds me of Charles Bronson’s low budget mid-80s movies like Murphy’s Law.

A former Russian mobster named Ruslan, who is now a crime novelist, returns home and discovers his daughter is marrying his arch nemesis.

His past also comes back to haunt him when his family is threatened. Hungry for justice, Ruslan returns to the life he once knew…with a vengeance.

Crank High Voltage

02 May

Nice!!

If you haven’t watched the first Crank, I recommend watching it before you even think of watching this film.

It’ll give you some good background story and also prepare you for what you are about to see.

If you saw the first Crank and didn’t like it… do not watch this movie.

Multiply Crank by 1000 volts and you get this incredible sequel. nice! ;)

The Crank franchise is an acquired taste, and this stretches it even for fans.

The indestructible hopped-up hitman Chev Chelios, played to the hilt once again by Jason Statham, returns in Crank 2: High Voltage, picking up where the first film left off except this time, Chelios is chasing a Chinese gangster who hijacked his heart and substituted it with a mechanical one that needs to be jolted with an electric charge to stay pumping.
