G-Force

Friday, July 31st, 2009

The animation is top-notch, the guinea pigs look very photo-realistic and after a few minutes you forget they’re CGI.

There is an inherent cuteness factor to them, and just like last year’s Alvin and the Chipmunks, the filmmakers know that this will be the biggest draw for kids and their parents.

There are plenty of jokes to keep a smile on your face.

A comedy adventure about the latest evolution of a covert government program to train animals to work in espionage.

Armed with the latest high-tech spy equipment, these highly trained guinea pigs discover that the fate of the world is in their paws.

Orphan

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Orphan is very disturbing at parts, and pretty gruesome.

The movie overall is excellent, has some great acting, an amazing script, and excellent execution.

The movie really has a lot of suspense and the twist is pulled off very well and packs a big punch to the viewer.

The best thing the film has is the script, what Esther does to the family is brilliant.

The movie also has several sub-plots that work very well and add some complexity to the whole thing.

The sub-plots never feel like too much, because they are very subtly put in there.

Overall, if you are tired of bad horror films, and want to see a very intelligent and well made film, we would suggest this.

Or if you just want to see a great movie see this! You will be very surprised at how excellent this movie turned out, and so will everyone else be too!

The tragic loss of their unborn child has devastated Kate and John, taking a toll on both their marriage and Kate’s fragile psyche as she is plagued by nightmares and haunted by demons from her past.

Struggling to regain some semblance of normalcy in their lives, the couple decides to adopt another child.

At the local orphanage, both John and Kate find themselves strangely drawn to a young girl named Esther.

Almost as soon as they welcome Esther into their home, however, an alarming series of events begins to unfold, leading Kate to believe that there’s something wrong with Esther.

Observe And Report

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

The supporting players provide some reliable laughs, but there is not a set-up-punchline format to guide viewers through.

By the end of the film, a Hollywood ending was not forthcoming.

It seemed the only plausible outcome was something depressing and ugly, and any kind of happy conclusion for the protagonist would ring of inauthenticity.

Wrong as it turns out, the closing scenes are gut-busting and satisfying, and in keeping with the overall feeling of the movie.

Observe and Report has a much fresher and more original feel to it than most studio comedies.

At the Forest Ridge Mall, head of security Ronnie Barnhardt patrols his jurisdiction with an iron fist, combating skateboarders, shoplifters and the occasional unruly customer while dreaming of the day when he can swap his flashlight for a badge and a gun.

His delusions of grandeur are put to the test when the mall is struck by a flasher.

Driven to protect and serve the mall and its patrons, Ronnie seizes the opportunity to showcase his underappreciated law enforcement talents on a grand scale, hoping his solution of this crime will earn a coveted spot at the police academy.

Break

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

image-3FE9_4A739C13The movie is a bit misleading at first, starting as more of a crime drama/love story, then halfway through morphs into a killer action flick with the introduction of Xin.

There’s so much going on in this movie in terms of characters (there’s a lot) and side stories (there’s several) and genres (crime/drama/action/dark comedy - and those are just the ones we picked up on) yet it all just works.

A terminally ill crime boss, known only as “the man”, hires a hit man named Frank to carry out his own assassination as well as the assassination of the woman he loves.

When the woman turns out to be Frank’s long lost lover, he turns against “the man”, becoming the target himself.

Polar Express (BRR)

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

This isn’t the 3-D version, but it looks well neat :D

It is quite an imaginative and innovative achievement–impressive enough to assure its place among future Christmas favorites with unlimited appeal for the young in heart.

The message of Christmas is lightly hinted at but when Tom Hanks as the train conductor tells the little boy, “The true meaning of Christmas is in your heart,” we can be assured that children everywhere will definitely “get it”.

So if you really love christmas, come on and let it snow!

This is the story of a young hero boy on Christmas Eve who boards on a powerful magical train that’s headed to the North Pole and Santa Claus’s home.

What unfolds is an an adventure which follows a doubting boy, who takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole; during this ride, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery which shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe.

Brüno

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Bruno will either drive you into hysterics, or will horrify and shock you.

The comedy is brilliant, and while it is shocking you cannot help but laugh.

It balances wincing with embarrassment with shock humour to perfection.

It’s an incredibly funny movie with so many memorable lines and scenes that are just hilarious.

The only gripe with it is the length of the film which is both a blessing and a curse for the final cut.

But when a movie is this funny, how can you really criticise it for not falling into many comedies traps?

Overall Bruno is a must see of this summer, which so far seems to be lacking in many quality movies.

Anyway if you want a short, sharp, shock, but a funny shock, of a movie then Bruno is definitely for you.

Just don’t watch with your parents! ;)

Borat trickster Sacha Baron Cohen returns to the big screen to offer yet another stinging dose of sociopolitical satire in this comedy that finds him assuming the persona of gay fashionmonger Bruno, the self-proclaimed “voice of Austrian youth TV.”

Originally conceived as part of Cohen’s cult television series Da Ali G Show, the character of Bruno offered a cleverly costumed Cohen the opportunity to highlight the absurdities of the fashion industry by interviewing unsuspecting fashion icons and other haute couture hangers-on.

New Windows 7 64 bit

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

While Windows Vista (launched in early 2007) addressed a number of Window’s XP’s biggest issues, most notably a much needed security refresh, Microsoft’s most current operating system (OS) came with its own string of new headaches, like incessant pop-ups and some frustrating incompatibilities (not to mention its own set of flaws).

Despite what those Mac vs. PC commercials might say, Microsoft has been listening, and its answer is Windows 7.

It recently gave a preview version to a number of early-access developers and journalists, so let’s run down some of the highlights of their early impressions of this OS that could still be several years away.

Improved User Interface
- Vista looks a lot like XP, an important thing for ease of transition from one operating system to the next.

So, naturally, Windows 7 will look an awful lot like Vista, but, that’s not to say that it won’t deliver a number of important additions, perhaps the biggest being a series of “gestures” that will interpret your mouse hovering over something as an indication that you’d like to see more information about it.

For those who didn’t know Windows is based on the original WIMP used on RISC OS machines which powered Archimedes machines, I know - I had one :D

WIMP was what was displayed “Windows, Icons, Menu and Pointer” i think.
