Alien Trespass

16 Aug

Unlike contemporary sci-fi monster thrillers, which rely on unreasonably graphic gore and violence, this movie finds its feet in story and pathos.

The characters are memorable, the special effects are sublimely imperfect, even the monster has an endearing quality in its hokeyness.

The film captures the hopes, dreams, angst and fears of the 50s, and evokes not as much nostalgia but perspective.

The film is not satire, for the characters believe in themselves and their peril as seriously as we believe in ours.

Neither is it comedy, despite some truly funny moments.

The actors had a whale of a good time in their roles, although humanity is indeed threatened in Alien Trespass, we see that the essence of humanity extends far beyond our own solar system.

The story begins in 1957 in the star-filled skies above California’s Mojave Desert.

It is a special night for noted astronomer Ted Lewis, who is preparing a special dinner for his beautiful, adoring wife Lana to celebrate their wedding anniversary.

In another part of town, Tammy, a waitress at small local diner with big plans for the future, looks out her window and is excited to see a shooting star, which she takes as a good sign for her dreams.

But, what Dr. Lewis and Tammy assume is a shooting star, is really an alien spaceship……

Live Animals

15 Aug

After introducing us to Wayne, we meet brother and sister, Nick and Erin.

Erin is clearly depressed over a recent breakup, and caring sibling Nick encourages her to get over it by “getting under someone.”

A raunchy party ensues, but as the teens drink and screw, dark forces spy on them through a telephoto lens.

And when the party winds down, the teens find themselves hunted by a dart gun weilding, diabolical trapper named Edgar.

Benson smartly front loads his story with the traditional slasher type sequence even having his mammoth villain don a sinister mask clearly an homage to Carpenter’s classic “Halloween.”

The Collector

14 Aug

The Collector was a very suspenseful movie until the ending, which was kind of disappointing.

But besides that, the movie was great as a whole, sure, there were some bad parts that should have been fixed, but that is part of a scary movie genre.

At some point, the saw creators need to learn how to end the movie, but if you can survive with a mostly bad, but part good ending, we would suggest seeing it.

The acting, traps, and being in a house that is completely dark is a good premise for the movie, and it works very well for the most part.

If you are a person who wants a perfect ending, do not see it then.

You will be disappointed.

But otherwise, besides a few parts, it was a pretty intense film. :)

For handyman and ex-con Arkin, a quiet home and a family on vacation is an “opportunity”.

Inside the house lies a jeweler’s safe, and inside the safe is a gem – his only hope for repaying a debt to his ex-wife and keeping what’s left of his family intact.

Unfortunately for Arkin, inside the house is also a box containing the latest addition to a collection catalogued in blood, bone and tears.

As the seconds tick down to midnight, Arkin becomes a reluctant hero trapped by a masked “Collector” in a maze of lethal invention – the Spanish Inquisition as imagined by Rube Goldberg – while trying to rescue the very family he came to rob.

From Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, the twisted minds behind “Saw IV”, “V” and the upcoming “Saw VI”, “The Collector” emerges as a real-time game of cat-and-mouse, melding primal horror with suspense thriller.

District 9

13 Aug

Abandoning the usual settings of Hollywood sci-fi and placing us in the harsh slums of South Africa, we are given an original piece of work which takes risks in the way it tells its story.

Not only does it go against the expectations of audiences who have been trained to expect mediocrity from their sci-fi, it goes above and beyond the call of duty to provide us with spectacle as well as something to ponder after we’ve downed our popcorn. :)

There is, thankfully not an overused, overexposed celebrity in sight, and every unknown face in the film gives a solid performance.

The aliens themselves, brilliantly realized with top notch CGI even manage to make us feel something, only rivaled by Gollum from “Lord of the Rings”.

District 9 has so much to like, it’s spectacular, darkly funny, entertaining and thoughtful all at the same time, and it’s all done on a meager $30m budget.

There is true talent on show here, if only there were more films like this, the world of cinema would be a more interesting place to be.

Twenty years before, an alien ship is seen coming towards Earth and arrives above Johannesburg, South Africa.

It hovers above the city for three months without any contact; eventually humans take the initiative and cut into the ship.

They discover a large group of aliens who are malnourished and sick.

The aliens are later assessed as apparently being all “workers”, with their leadership mysteriously missing (it is hypothesized that a plague may have wiped out all of the leadership-caste).

Grainy footage shows part of the ship (supposed to be a command module) falling to Earth, but nobody has been able to find it, leaving the ship inoperable.

The Crypt

12 Aug

There’s nothing spectacular about this low-budget horror film, but it somehow ends up being a lot more entertaining than it has any right to be.

The plot is incredibly light for its hour and twenty minute running time, so there are an excessive amount of “girls crawling through crypt corridor” scenes.

The director doesn’t skip ahead, even when the thieves are backtracking through areas we’ve already seen, and those sequences can get dull.

If you like cleavage, plenty is on display.

A bit more cleavage than gore, perhaps unfortunately. :P

The sets are pretty incredible, if obviously too new to be built during the Great Depression, and unlike most low budget films they are actually lit very well.

In fact sometimes the crypt corridors are a bit too bright – I think a little bit of darkness might have made for a scarier mood.

Six young criminals break into hidden catacombs underneath their town and attempt to steal jewelry buried from the “Great Depression” only to find inhabitants guarding the precious belongings.

After being trapped in this dark maze of crypts the group tries to escape alive.

nice! ;) magic

The Informers

11 Aug

Interesting film, well edited, well acted, well shot.

Maybe the score was a bit basic, but the soundtrack was ironic and captured the superficial spirit of the period.

Amazing performances from all the actors.

The film could have been fleshed out a little more, after seeing it, the film has a lingering quality.

Anyway, it’s a pretty cool movie but it could have been longer.

Check this movie out. It is pretty cool. ;)

A multi-strand narrative set in early 1980’s Los Angeles, centered on an array of characters who represent both the top of the heap (a Hollywood dream merchant, a dissolute rock star, an aging newscaster) and the bottom (a voyeuristic doorman, an amoral ex-con).

Connecting the intertwining strands are a group of beautiful, blonde young men and women who sleep all day and party all night, doing drugs — and one another –with abandon, never realizing that they are dancing on the edge of a volcano.

sounds a bit like me! ;) magic

Assault On Precinct 13

10 Aug

2cy3xw5.png

Due to the snowy conditions, a prison bus transferring dangerous cop-killer Marion Bishop (Laurence Fishburne) is forced to take refuge in Precinct 13.

But it becomes clear soon enough that there are a large number of corrupt cops surrounding the precinct, determined to kill Bishop and every possible witness inside.

Faced with no other options, Roenick frees and arms the prisoners, using whatever means necessary to battle against the far more numerous and better armed enemy.

John Carpenter’s 1976 cult hit was a fairly effective thriller, maintaining an atmospheric claustrophobia that balanced nicely with the well-choreographed shootouts.

Though there are many differences between these versions, both plot-wise and stylistically, this remake essentially opts for the same brand of edge-of-the-seat excitement, but as is par for this generation’s offerings, the action sequences are pumped up with a lot more firepower and a lot less plausibility.

On New Year’s Eve, inside a police station that’s about to be closed for good, officer Jake Roenick must cobble together a force made up cops and criminals to save themselves from a mob looking to kill mobster Marion Bishop.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

09 Aug

Most of us here were probably fans of the G.I Joe toys when we were kids (back then they where called Action Force) so we had a good idea of the characters and story before hand.

This film stayed true to most of the original concepts with a few tweaks for the better here and there.

It’s a fun action film full of special effects and doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Don’t see this film if you are an uptight, unhappy film critic that spends too much time highlighting plot holes and acting because that’s not what this film is about!!

It’s more of a roller-coaster ride. Fast, furious and just fun.

Director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy) adapts the beloved Hasbro G.I. Joe toy line with this Paramount Pictures production that pits the Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity against the evil forces of the organization known as Cobra.

Dennis Quaid and Channing Tatum star as General Hawk and Duke Hauser, respectively, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marlon Wayans leading the rest of the cast, including Sienna Miller, Ray Park, Rachel Nichols, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Saïd Taghmaoui, and Asian film star Lee Byung-hun.

See! its all fun ;) magic

Smiley Face

08 Aug

s45.jpg

Stoner movies have always been categorized in a different way as regular movies.

It’s not something serious that you would watch to learn a valuable lesson or to experience an unearthly ascension.

The movie is just pure fun, the plot is rather easy to understand and lack of complexity makes it a pleasant experience for everyone who would appreciate the humor in drug use.

Anna Faris describes the condition of a high person more accurate than expected.

We liked the sound effects that can be heard now and then according to the situation or what the protagonist is thinking. :)

The cup cake scene had us up the wall :P

enjoy! ;) magic
