Whatever Works

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Don’t believe the negative reviews.

It’s the funniest one from Woody since maybe Deconstructing Harry.

Everything works. From the very original script, combining Allen’s bleak view of life with effervescent farcical plot line, to uniformly fine performances from Larry David, Evan Rachel Wood, Patricia Clarkson, and the rest of the cast.

Comedic sparks fly non-stop, not just light chuckles here and there at Woody’s witticisms, but loud all-out laughter.

The scenes with Ed Begley’s and Patricia Clarkson’s transformations of ‘classic text-book right-wing material’ are especially hilarious.

Attempting to impress his ideologies on religion, relationships, and the randomness (and worthlessness) of existence, lifelong New York resident Boris Yellnikoff rants to anyone who will listen, including the audience.

But when he begrudgingly allows naive Mississippi runaway Melodie St. Ann Celestine to live in his apartment, his reclusive rages give way to an unlikely friendship and Boris begins to mold the impressionable young girl’s worldly views to match his own.

When it comes to love, “whatever works” is his motto, but his already perplexed life complicates itself further when Melodie’s parents eventually track her down.

Adoration

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

“Adoration” is an effective and intelligent look at topical and relevant issues, but really shines as an examination of the nature of human thought, the results of the sort of environment which surrounds us, where hatred and prejudice is born, and ultimately as a character study of three individuals who all need to overcome events in their past by embracing and fully understanding them.

Simon (Devon Bostick) lives with his uncle (Scott Speedman).

Some years previously his father had crashed the family car, killing himself and Simon’s mother.

But Simon has always suspected it may not have been an accident. In the course of a high school assignment, Simon writes an article in which he reworks his family’s past and then puts the piece on the internet, effectively giving himself a false identity.

He then starts to use this to try to investigate what really happened.

The Ugly Truth

Monday, September 28th, 2009

What a fun movie! Don’t pay attention to the critics - they need to just go and enjoy a movie sometimes.

If you don’t like crude, sexist humor, then don’t go see this movie.

However, if you can relax and just go watch a movie, then you will enjoy this one.

This movie delivers everything you expect from a romantic comedy!

Dozens of fun scenes and a good chemistry between Buttler and Heigel. Lots of jokes: adult and universal.

And Heigel’s character is so real with all those issues about the relationships and frankly vulnerability.

Of course, life is much more complicated but leaving the theater you feel yourself happy and mighty in the questions of fascination.

Thanks to the writers, the story doesn’t fall in dynamics and doesn’t bore you until the credits.

A romantically challenged morning show producer is reluctantly embroiled in a series of outrageous tests by her chauvinistic correspondent to prove his theories on relationships and help her find love.

His clever ploys, however, lead to an unexpected result.

Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

From the outset, the quality is soo lacking, the (we use this term very loosely) ‘filmmakers’ have to resort to the cheapest of clichés, a random pair of nice ???? here and there.

Alex and her friends go to the woods for a couple of days; her friends are killed by the wild, now staple mutant killer, Three Finger, who of course cannibalizes them.

She is left to fend for herself, but not for long …. meanwhile some dangerous prisoners are being transferred by Nate Wilson, a prison warden, on his last day before leaving to become a lawyer.

During transport their truck is attacked by Three Finger and the prisoners escape. While being chased through the woods, the prisoners come across an abandoned truck filled with bags of money.

One-by-one Three Finger attempts to kill all the prisoners and everyone who searches for them.

Stan Helsing

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

You can easily compare this to the greats like Date Movie and Disaster Movie and everything by Aaron Seltzer!

This is another addition to the “well it sounded good when we threw it around the idea table” club. :P

Of course how can you expect much when one of his last pictures was the comedic gem Soul Plane.

If your one of those people who hate that someone close to you drinks too much get back at them by playing the drinking game to this movie.

It’s simple the rules are you drink every time something funny actually happens in the film.

This film is guaranteed to leave you sober.

However we can’t guarantee you both won’t drink yourself silly to try and forget the movie you just watched :)

The action takes place on Halloween night, when a videostore clerk, Stan Helsing, must reluctantly save a town from the six most-feared monsters in cinematic history.

The Thaw

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Even though the movie as a whole isn’t really awesomely smashing in any way, the first thing that really struck me is how well done and thought out it all is.

It features realistic portrayals of human behavior all the way through; from phobias, realistic explanations of how they came to the conclusions they did, to a person using a multimeter and electrical tape to actually fix something ike a real person might.

The Thaw offers more suspense than it does horror, though there are some jumpy and/or gory moments.

The CGI bugs are just convincing enough, and the other effects are good.

While the plot revolves largely around Kilmer’s character, he doesn’t get very much screen time.

However the other actors were engaging enough that we didn’t find myself missing him all that much.

The story starts with Kilmer and his team, beginning the movie’s more mysterious element.

It then switches to the students for their rather straightforward horror-genre struggle against the bugs.

The Kilmer part of the story is revisited in the end, to wrap up the mystery with a twist.

Having the mystery lingering in the background was a nice touch, as it added some extra intrigue to carry the movie.

At a remote Arctic research station, four ecology students discover the real horror of global warming is not the melting ice, but what’s frozen within it.

A prehistoric parasite is released from the carcass of a Woolly Mammoth upon the unsuspecting students who are forced to quarantine and make necessary sacrifices, or risk infecting the rest of the world.

Superman Batman Public Enemies

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

From the makers of Superman: Doomsday, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern: First Flight, comes this long-awaited title adapted from the comics.

It features the two pillars of DC Comics: Batman and Superman.

We finally see a buddy action-hero type adventure with tons of action and great one liners (Superman: You’re absolutely sure this is going to work?

Toyman: Does Powergirl have big–?). :P

Though the action and graphics sequences were remarkable and the original voice acting talent assembled was magnificent, this animated movie fell short in terms of our expectations in terms of plot and an original story line.

The sixth DVD project from Warner Bros’s DC Animated Universe unit, “Superman/Batman: Public Enemies” is a fun, socially-conscious adaptation of the six-part comic book story/graphic novel by writer Jeph Loeb and artists Ed McGuinness and Dexter Vines.

Sure, it’s short (67 minutes) and not to the letter (no continuity-oriented sidebars), but it’s action-packed coolness.

A desperate solution for a troubled country: Lex Luthor for President with the Justice League in the service of the government.

Only Batman and Superman stand against the new regime – and their disloyalty proves to be exactly what Luthor intended.

Using their outcast status to instigate a scandal against Superman, Luthor finally tastes a victory in his vendetta against The Man of Steel.

Doghouse

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Some friends want to take a buddy of theirs out for a trip to help him get over a divorce and to show him that not all women are all alike.

Once they arrive at an isolated town, they find that all the women are man-eating cannibals and fight for their lives.

Its kind of ironic because in our world today, I think that’s what most women are.

Crazy, greedy, man-eating life forms that you just can’t get enough of.

Its in 2nd place next to Shaun of the Dead, well worth a watch!

You have to take the movie for what it is, fun and entertainment.

This really is the battle between the sexes, but done with tough-in –cheek and is no way near as tacky as Lesbian Vampire Killers.

Jake West delivers a proper lads movie but with a twist to the lads view of life.

The gory part are proper gory, all done with a laugh. Danny Dyer and the boys are in great form.

This movies strength is that it has attracted some of Britain’s great young actors

Struggling with their own women troubles, they drag him off for an ultimate lads drinking weekend in the country.

Arriving in the village of Moodley where the women outnumber the men 3:1, the boys find themselves holidaying in a village overrun by psychotic, homicidal Zombirds with a thirst for male flesh!

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Visually, this is perhaps one of the most spectacular animated movies we’ve ever seen, with literally every frame being a feast for the eyes.

There were moments, especially throughout the movie’s undeniably thrilling climax, in which we were just amazed.

Not to throw in so much hyperbole, but this truly is one of the best animated films in terms of pure eye candy. :P

This should be a movie you should watch in theaters because it’s unlike any movie you have ever seen.

There’s a lot of ingenuity and inventiveness and cleverness that is warped around the movie.

The film is entertaining for both the kids and the adults to enjoy, so there’s no need to worry. ;)

If you have the chance to see this in 3D, see it but we’re sure the 2D version works just as well.

If you’re iffy about the trailer, that’s a good thing because the movie surpasses the trailer by ten times.

Prepare to get served…literally.

Inspired by the beloved children’s book, the film focuses on a town where food falls from the sky like rain.

Bill Hader will voice Flint Lockwood, a young inventor who dreams of creating something that will improve everyone’s life.

Anna Faris takes on the role of Sam Sparks, a weathergirl covering the phenomenon who hides her intelligence behind a perky exterior.

James Caan plays Tim Lockwood, Flint’s technophobic father.

Andy Samberg plays Brent, the town bully who has plagued Flint since childhood.

Bruce Campbell plays Mayor Shelbourne, who figures out that Flint’s invention can put the town, and more importantly himself, on the map.

Mr. T plays the by-the-rules town cop Earl Devereaux, and Tracy Morgan takes on the role of Earl’s rule-breaking son, Cal.

Jennifer’s Body

Monday, September 21st, 2009

‘Jennifers Body’ appears to be a dark comedy.

There are humorous parts that are related to some sort for sexual innuendo or blatant sexual act (such as the charming description of Jennifer, played by Megan fox, who had to sit on a bag of frozen vegetables after losing her ‘backdoor virginity.’)

But there are good suspenseful horror moments, there were a lot of scenes with ‘cheap scares’, the typical “I know someone is going to jump out now, I’m just waiting for it” scare.

Yet, the blood and gore was convincing, and we have to say that the scene where Jennifer appears in her best friends house covered in blood, giving a demonic blood filled smile and spewing out black goo was pretty good horror.

You gotta love those guys who make the Trailers to these sort of films they do a great job of generating interest!

Nerdy, reserved bookworm Needy and arrogant, conceited cheerleader Jennifer are best friends, though they share little in common.

They share even less in common when Jennifer mysteriously gains an appetite for human blood after a disastrous fire at a local bar.

As Needy’s male classmates are steadily killed off in gruesome attacks, the young girl must uncover the truth behind her friend’s transformation and find a way to stop the bloodthirsty rampage before it reaches her own boyfriend Chip.
