Green Zone

01 Jun

This is an interesting war film set in Iraq after the Oscar winning ‘Hurt Locker’ but it is not a disappointment, it entertains and retains interest throughout.

Clearly not based on true events but Paul Greengrass positively sets out to tell us that we were all misled by the propaganda of Iraq having weapons of nuclear disarmament, not so it seems!

Yes, good link up between Greengrass and Matt Damon with clear links to the Bourne series.

Damon himself has been a busy boy lately what with Invictus and The Informant.

So many Iraq war films have now been made that the subject matter is rapidly becoming less than interesting. this is likely to be classified as just another Iraq war film and quite easily forgotten.

Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, United 93) re-team for their latest electrifying thriller in Green Zone.

Set in the chaotic early days of the Iraqi War where no one could be trusted and every decision could detonate unforeseen consequences.

During the U.S.-led occupation of Baghdad in 2003, Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (Damon) and his team of Army inspectors were dispatched to find weapons of mass destruction believed to be stockpiled in the Iraqi desert.

  • Revealing mistakes: When the Google results screen appears after Miller’s search for information on Lawrie Dayne’s WMD articles, all of the URLs are for www.twsj.com, except for one which is www.twsj.coml. This (coml) is not a valid top level domain, so the URL is not plausible in reality.
  • Revealing mistakes: At the end of the film, CWO Miller sends an email to Wall Street Journal Writer Lawrie Dayne. In the email he writes “See attached”. However, there is no visible attachment in the initial email, and when the scene cuts back to the computer screen there is a Document open and an attachment symbol within the email that was previously not there.
  • Miscellaneous: The character of Jonathan Vaught is referred to as “Captain Vaught” in dialogue, and his uniform bears Captain’s insignia, but the credits list him as “Colonel Jonathan Vaught”.

Anachronisms: A Stryker ICV vehicle is quickly seen driving by in the background during the airport scene. This scene takes place in the movie well before the clip of George Bush’s “Mission Accomplished” speech; which was on May 1st 2003. The Stryker, however, wasn’t fielded until October/November 2003. This is at least 5 months after the Bush speech and well after the time period in which the airport scene took place.
