Adoration
Thursday, October 29th, 2009
“Adoration” is an effective and intelligent look at topical and relevant issues, but really shines as an examination of the nature of human thought, the results of the sort of environment which surrounds us, where hatred and prejudice is born, and ultimately as a character study of three individuals who all need to overcome events in their past by embracing and fully understanding them.
Simon (Devon Bostick) lives with his uncle (Scott Speedman).
Some years previously his father had crashed the family car, killing himself and Simon’s mother.
But Simon has always suspected it may not have been an accident.
In the course of a high school assignment, Simon writes an article in which he reworks his family’s past and then puts the piece on the internet, effectively giving himself a false identity.
He then starts to use this to try to investigate what really happened.

Blindness
Sunday, July 5th, 2009
Julianne Moore spends the first half hour repeating her role of the depressed / misunderstood wife in “The Hours” (cake-baking included).
She fails to convey the bewilderment as to the “why” she’s the only one to keep her eyesight, but she’s good when she gets into action.
It’s not a perfect film by any means, though, if you can’t picture yourself as a blind person, some things may not make a lot of sense.
There is a scene however in which one of the characters sings a very popular song in a slightly different way - one you are not likely to forget anytime soon.
When a sudden plague of blindness devastates a city, a small group of the afflicted band together to triumphantly overcome the horrific conditions of their imposed quarantine.

Dead Wood
Saturday, May 23rd, 2009 This is a British horror film about a group of young campers who get lost in the woods but thankfully don’t get picked off by a man in a mask.
nice
Instead what starts out as a fairly standard slasher setup turns into a creepy and rather effective supernatural horror film.
It’s actually pretty scary in places too!
The excellent writing and fantastic actors help a lot too as you really get to know and like the characters before they get into the story.
But the real surprises in this film are the mind-blowing special effects used sparingly for maximum effect.
The film is a real achievement and definitely one for horror fans to look out for!
super!!

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009The cliché in horrors is about people doing exactly what they shouldn’t ( going down into the basement or going up into the attic).
The worst thing is that, the more I think about the overall plot, the less sense it actually makes and the more holes we keep finding.
A real shame really, as I’m fairly sure that there was a good idea lurking in there somewhere… ooohh yeeahh
A group of artists live in a community of rundown warehouses.
At a gallery opening, one of them, Sai, meets a handsome European stranger named Reinfield, whos shows not only interest in her haunting paintings, but in her as well.

Taken
Sunday, November 9th, 2008
The most thrilling movie I’ve seen in a long time.
Neeson is what we would fear if James Bond went to hell and came back for revenge (I doubt big budget Quantum of Solace will top this).
I loved Jason Bourne; but where Bourne is confused for half the movie, Neeson is looking down a barrel of a pistol 3/4 of the time.
In a three way spy battle, I would put Neeson edging out Bourne, who would be a step ahead of Bond.
Between the jaw-dropping action sequences was the subject matter of international trafficking, which was pretty miserable to watch.
An ex-soldier (Liam Neeson) traveling through Europe embarks on a frantic quest to rescue his daughter (Maggie Grace) after the young girl is abducted by slave traders in District B13 director Pierre Morel’s contemporary thriller Taken.

Youth Without Youth
Saturday, October 25th, 2008
This is definitely not everyone’s cup of tea and has a pretty good chance of becoming a cult film.
It explores major philosophic subjects from a dialectic angle, which might confuse pedestrians.
In a nutshell: an elderly professor is challenged by his inability to complete his life’s work.
He is struck by lightning and gets the opportunity to observe life from a meta-human POV.
He realizes that intellect, love , morals and reality in general are always ambiguous.
A love story wrapped in a mystery , “Youth Without Youth” stars Tim Roth as Dominic Matei, a professor whose life changes after a cataclysmic incident during the dark years prior to World War II.

My Sassy Girl
Sunday, September 7th, 2008All in all, it’s an OK movie on its own.
Not much different from other cheesy romantic movies, other than the fact that this is a remake of the immensely popular Korean movie of the same name.
However, if you compare it to the original one, the pace is much faster and the settings are very different.
I find that the American version lacks the charisma of the 2 main characters, and feels very rushed.
You don’t feel very intimate with them at all, it just feels like another romantic comedy.
The funny scenes in the remake aren’t as funny as the original; it lacks that pace and originality which made the first one so famous.
