Public Enemies

10 Jul

The film is directed by Michael Mann who brought us such films as Heat, The Insider, and Collateral and he adds another good film to his resume with this one.

The action sequences, bank heists, and shootouts in this film are probably the biggest highlights.

After all, this is from the same guy who gave us one of the most famous and arguably the best shootout of all time in Heat.

The sequences are cool, slick, and gritty; excellence at it’s best.

A note of praise for the superb shootout at the Little Bohemia lodge, which was an extremely impressive scene :D

In the action-thriller Public Enemies, acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard in the incredible and true story.

Robber, John Dillinger (Depp) the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoovers fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale).

No one could stop Dillinger. No jail could hold him.

His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyonefrom his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression.

Land of the Lost

07 Jun

Although the entire film looks like it needed a lot less green screened effects, there is still plenty of obvious effort put into the creatures that show up during the film.

The showpiece of a Tyrannosaurus Rex is incredibly detailed, and downright terrifying in some instances.

It is not the game changer like the T-Rex in Jurassic Park was sixteen years ago, but it still looks relatively magnificent. ;)

The makeup effects to bring the ape/human hybrids and Sleestaks to life are just as good, if not better.

There’s plenty of reviews that are disappointing but judge for yourself!

Will Ferrell stars as has-been scientist Dr. Rick Marshall, sucked into one and spat back through time.

Now, Marshall has no weapons, few skills and questionable smarts to survive in an alternate universe full of marauding dinosaurs and fantastic creatures from beyond our world–a place of spectacular sights and super-scaled comedy known as the Land of the Lost.

Sucked alongside him for the adventure are crack-smart research assistant Holly (Anna Friel) and a redneck survivalist (Danny McBride) named Will.

Chased by T. rex and stalked by painfully slow reptiles known as Sleestaks, Marshall, Will and Holly must rely on their only ally; a primate called Chaka (Jorma Taccone) to navigate out of the hybrid dimension.

The Skeptic

11 May

What I liked about this movie is that it is very laid-back and down-to-earth in it’s telling.

The way the haunting unfolds in small but creepy events served to make the hair stand up on the back of my neck.

This movie doesn’t rely on over-the-top haunting events, thank God, and that’s what makes it all the more believable.

It’s simple but very eerie, the way a haunted house movie should be.

The characters were all unique and compelling people and the dialogue is witty and intelligent.

Really worth spending 89 minutes of your life on. :)

After the mysterious death of his Aunt, a confirmed skeptic lawyer, Bryan Becket, dismisses reports that her house is haunted and moves in.

Immediately occurrences begin he cannot explain.

Beyond the occurrences there is something about the house which gnaws at Becket – some strange connection he senses he has with the house’s past.

Miss March 2009

10 May

This movie was magic!

It far exceeded what I expected because Trevor Moore is a comedic genius.

This movie puts a new spin on the teen/party movies, and I welcome it with wide open arms.

It is an instant classic with parts reminiscent of “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” and “American Pie” if it were funny.

Sure, there is some potty humor, but very little.

The movie doesn’t take itself very seriously, and it’s great that it doesn’t.

If it did, critics would be slamming it for factual inconsistencies.

It almost seems to make fun of itself.

‘Miss March’ tells the story of a young man (Zach Cregger, The Whitest Kids U’ Know) who awakens from a four-year coma to hear that his once virginal high-school sweetheart (Raquel Alessi) has since become a naked centerfold in Playboy Magazine.

He and his sex-crazed best friend (Trevor Moore, The Whitest Kids U’ Know) decide to take a cross- country road trip in order to crash a party at the magazine’s legendary headquarters and win back the girl.

Fast And Furious

13 Apr

The movie does an excellent job of keeping you on the edge of your seat, there’s no shortage of action and a story that keeps your attention.

The movie starts out in the DR with Vin Diesel pulling off a fairly implausible heist of hijacking a fuel tanker with his new crew.

Like the previous three, you certainly need to suspend your disbelief for the duration of the movie, however I was glad to see they didn’t go overboard and kept the special effects and CGI to what seemed like a happy minimum. ;) nice

Vin Diesel and Paul Walker team up again for the ultimate chapter of the franchise built on speed— “Fast & Furious.”

Heading back to the streets where it all began, they rejoin Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster to blast muscle, tuner and exotic cars across Los Angeles and floor through the Mexican desert in the new high-octane action-thriller.

Monsters vs Aliens

30 Mar

I’m not a huge fan of DreamWorks Animation.

I think the majority of their films are mediocre at best, with the only ones that I really enjoyed being the first Shrek and Kung Fu Panda.

The trailers for Monsters vs. Aliens did get me interested, though, and the voice cast seemed pretty impressive.

Even so, I was still fairly skeptical about how it would finally turn out.

You will be pleasantly surprised. :)

When a meteorite from outer space hits a young California girl named Susan Murphy and turns her into a giant monster, she is taken to a secret government compound where she meets a ragtag group of monsters also rounded up over the years.

Inkheart

04 Feb

The whole thing had the same feel to it as the book – the film was a little rushed but overall it flowed very well (and to be honest Cornelia’s book doesn’t have the best flow in the world).:)

I think things that needed to be explained were explained well, and nothing would have confused me if I hadn’t read the book beforehand.

This is a very good film which hopefully will delight all fans of Inkheart as much as it delighted me.

I am very pleased with it because it’s almost like they took the book and put it into film version, with a few tweaks (they are rather large ones, but they worked well).

It is good as a stand-alone project and also as a film companion to the book.

Without the book this is a very good film, but with the book it’s even better because its as true to the book as I think they could do (with changes, of course, but thats what makes it able to be a stand-alone film).

The opportunity for doing the sequels is still there, but if they didn’t want to the film wraps up nicely.

enjoy ;) magic

Tropic Thunder

30 Aug

If you are smart then you have seen the kind of movies Ben Stiller and Jack Black are in, and you know that the humor is quite fast and sometimes very crude.

If you are offended by this movie, then don’t see it.

Go see Space Chimps (good movie) :) , unless you are going to be offended by degradation of Life on other Planets, etc. :P

Just, take the movie for what it is – a movie is meant to target a specific audience and bring humor and happiness.

The movie was not made out of malice, no one said “Let’s make fun of Asians and Retards,” and then popped out “Tropic of Thunder.”

have fun! ;) magic

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

23 Aug

As you’ve no doubt guessed, it was created with children as the intended audience.

There are several lines that are cringe-worthy for the older crowd.

There are a few plot elements, too, that are completely pointless.

On the flip side, this film ventures into classic Star Wars territory.

Oddly enough, at times the dialogue and overall storytelling felt very old school.

Then, in the very next “screen wipe”, you get prequel-equivalent scenes.

You’ll encounter some familiar creatures/characters, as well as locales that will evoke a smile. And even though much of the humor is directed toward children, a large chunk of it is also aimed at older fans.

The heroic Jedi Knights struggle to maintain order and restore peace.

More and more systems are falling prey to the forces of the dark side as the Galactic Republic slips further and further under the sway of the Separatists and their never-ending droid army.

Anakin Skywalker and his Padawan learner Ahsoka Tano find themselves on a mission with far-reaching consequences, one that brings them face-to-face with crime lord Jabba the Hutt.

But Count Dooku and his sinister agents, including the nefarious Asajj Ventress, will stop at nothing to ensure that Anakin and Ahsoka fail at their quest.
