How To Train Your Dragon

04 Aug

How to Train Your Dragon is probably the best Dreamworks picture we have ever seen.

If you didn’t know it was a Dreamworks picture, we wouldn’t be surprised if you thought it was a Pixar film.

This movie is almost as good as those amazing Pixar movies out there.

First off, let us say that you must watch this movie in 3D.

It’s not one of those movies that has 3D for the sake of it.

The visuals are absolutely stunning and a definite must see in 3D.

It’s not very predictable, it is enjoyable for both adults and young kids.

From the studio that brought you “Shrek,” “Madagascar” and “Kung Fu Panda” comes “How to Train Your Dragon.”

Set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, and based on the book by Cressida Cowell, the action comedy tells the story of Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t exactly fit in with his tribe’s longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers.

Hiccup’s world is turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges he and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view.

Warning: The Dragons may look a little scary to some younger kids.

All in all, the visuals are perfect.

Enjoy! ;) magic

The Book Of Eli

27 May

The Hughes Brothers, directors of From Hell and Menace II Society among others, have created an interesting and thoughtful action movie, that also carries a message of faith and hope.

The action set-pieces are well handled, and the photography of the movie, is very well done.

While the setting itself isn’t particularly new, along similar lines to Mad Max and other movies of this kind, they still get some pretty impressive visuals.

They are also helped by having two of the best actors around in this movie.

Denzel Washington carries the movie easily and is also very convincing in the action sequences.

Gary Oldman as Carnegie gives a performance more in line with some earlier work, such as Leon than some recent performances but he is always worth watching.

The rest of the cast, led by Mila Kunis all give good support.

Eli (Denzel Washington) has been on a journey for 30 years, walking west across America after a cataclysmic war that turned the earth into a total wasteland.

The world has become a lawless civilization where people must kill or be killed.

The barren roads belong to gangs of cutthroats who rob and kill for water, a pair of shoes, a lighter, or just for fun.

Eli is a peaceful man who only acts in self defense, and becomes a warrior with unbelievable killing skills when he is challenged.

Fire And Ice

29 Nov

The acting is okay in this, John Rhys-Davies and Arnold Vosloo were the strongest, and the rest of the cast were ho-hum.

The special effects are predictably terrible, however, that only applies to the stingray-like dragons because the landscapes are quite enjoyable to look at. ;)

The dragons do not look good, and it was quite a letdown to be honest.

All in all, Fire & Ice has an overall okay production value, making it seem like an expensive project, but with a mediocre story, all it really adds up to is a snooze-fest. :)

Shrek The Halls

29 Nov

This is what Shrek the third should have been.

High on comedy, magic soundtrack and a nice little moral at the end.

This is a wonderful holiday special that will no doubt be added to our family holiday rotation. In the plus column it was completely family friendly. nice ;)

A Shrek-style Christmas, as funny as it gets! The Christmas  tree isn’t the  only thing green  in this  new holiday classic. :P

Shrek is back and trying  to get  into the spirit of the season.

After promising Fiona and the kids a Christmas they’ll remember, he  is forced to take a  crash course in the holiday.

Space Chimps

28 Nov

Every scene was so rushed that the characters and their dynamics with each other lacked any real development, and every attempt at making the audience feel what was going on in the moment (or even caring at all) was murdered by this fact.

Obviously, I don’t need to say much more about the writing quality than I already have; it was just lazy, lazy, lazy.

Ham III, the grandson of the first chimp astronaut, is blasted off into space by an opportunity-seeking senator.

Soon, the fun-loving chimp has to get serious about the mission at hand: Rid a far-away planet of their nefarious leader.

City Of Ember

20 Nov

Easily the most impressive piece of the City of Ember puzzle is the delightfully ominous science-fiction visuals.

The massive sets were built in Northern Ireland in the shipyard-turned-soundstage of the location the Titanic was actually constructed in (now the largest soundstage in the world) and it’s never more apparent than in the beautiful crane shots through the underground city.

The CG elements are also top-notch, but the practical effects flawlessly immerse the audience in the fantasy world of pipeworks and generators.

For generations, the people of the City of Ember have flourished in an amazing world of glittering lights.

But Ember’s once powerful generator is failing … and the great lamps that illuminate the city are starting to flicker. Something needs done.

Madagascar 2: Escape 2 Africa

12 Nov

When it started up I was immediately sucked in, and I never became uninterested and it never stopped entertaining, because they did an excellent job at keeping your attention.

There were some parts in the movie where I felt as if they tried too hard to please the audience and then others it got a little dumb and boring, but overall I laughed I almost cried and when it was over I wanted to watch it again. ;)

It’s a great sequel to a great movie and I enjoyed watching it as much as the first.

It’s fantastic ;) , you must see it.

The sequel of the first movie, the New York Zoo Animals, Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe and Gloria the Hippo, still stranded on Madagascar, started to leave the island.

All of a sudden, they landed in the wilderness of Africa.

Quantum of Solace

11 Nov

After the critically acclaimed and much successful ‘Casino Royale’ I had hopes that ‘Quantum of Solace’ could rival this years best movie so far: ‘The Dark Knight’.

Well… it doesn’t even come close. :P

There use to be a time when Bond movies where trendsetting…

On paper Quantum of Solace may be a Bond movie.

But many of those things that people use to associate with Bond movies are gone.

And what’s up with this new style of filming and editing?

Quantum of Solace’ continues the high octane adventures of James Bond from ‘Casino Royale’.

Picking up literally days where the previous film left off, after being betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal.

Tropic Thunder

06 Nov

posterThe main reason Tropic Thunder works so well though is it’s down to the cast.

The likes of Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr, Jack Black, Jay Baruchel, Steve Coogan, and Nick Nolte all turning in terrific comedic performances that they had fun with.

In the action-comedy “Tropic Thunder,” Ben Stiller plays pampered action superstar Tugg Speedman, who is cast in the biggest, most expensive war movie ever produced.

He sets out to Southeast Asia with a “Who’s Who” of celebrity co-stars.

Soon after the production begins the actors are thrown into a real-life situation and are forced to become the fighting unit they’re portraying, in order to find a way out of the jungle in one piece.
