Transsiberian

21 Oct

b

Brad Anderson is probably the best unknown director working today.

He’s the independent Christopher Nolan, often making character-driven, psychologically complex flicks that transcend the trappings of their respective genres.

The movie opens in Moscow, where we see police detective Grinko, Ben Kingsley, investigating a double murder of two gangsters.

A big stash of bad drugs is also missing. Hmmm.

Transsiberian an uncommonly absorbing experience.

One of those legendary train trips that people used to dream about taking, the Transsiberian Express has probably seen better days.

An American couple, Roy (Woody Harrelson) and Jessie (Emily Mortimer), decide to return home the long way from their recent sojourn in Pekin and meet another couple from the West.

MAX Payne

18 Oct

mid1

As an adaptation, the Max Payne film is very different from the game in pretty much every aspect besides the tone and the characterizations.

I found it to be the dark and effective thriller that the game was.

A brooding performance from Wahlberg and a matching score only add to the film.

Stunning visuals, engineered by the fictional hallucinogenic drug in the film, in addition to the dark cinematography, steal attention away from the fact that the film’s editing is … eh well :) .

Coming together to solve a series of murders in New York City are a DEA agent (Wahlberg) whose family was slain as part of a conspiracy and an assassin (Kunis) out to avenge her sister’s death.

The duo will be hunted by the police, the mob, and a ruthless corporation.

BorderTown

12 Oct

After hearing this movie would not be released on the big screen I had doubts about whether I wanted to see it.

This movie was compelling, suspenseful, and well acted. J-lo is believable in her role and gives an impressive performance. :P

The importance of the topic of this movie should be enough to encourage people to see it but it is not for the faint of heart.

Put the kids to bed early before starting the movie!! ;)

Since 1993, almost 400 women have been murdered in Juarez, Mexico, a factory town that is home to people who toil away at “maquiladoras” (border factories) making cheap consumer goods for the US market.

have fun! ;) magic

Flawless

08 Oct

e340.jpgEverything works in this movie : The direction, the acting, the shooting, the story and the script – one commentators claimed that it was limited and one dimensional but it is quite on the contrary.

The only (small) flaw in the film was its so called “feministic” flavour, (yeah!!) it was completely unnecessary – any, if all, “politically correct messages”, would have been understood from the story itself – there was no need to shove it in the audience face. :P

enjoy! ;) magic

Hancock

06 Oct

Hancock is not the generic superhero film and is probably one of the more ingenious ideas to come across a producer’s desk in quite some time.

What it seems like is that the writers of the film loved the idea, started off extremely strong, and then began to realize that how hard it is to sustain a simplistic idea over the course of a full length motion picture (and it is because of this that Hancock is relatively short).

The lack of a central villain also hurts the movie a lot. :P

This is an action movie, so it should come as no surprise to see well done and original action in the movie. However, I felt the effects could have used a few more weeks of polishing in the editing room.

John Hancock (Will Smith) is an unhappy and reluctant superhero who is living in his own world.

For some unknown reason, Hancock is depressed and has started drinking very heavily.

He has saved many lives in Los Angeles over the years, but in doing so, he has no regards for damaging buildings, trains, roads, cars, or anything that gets in his way of getting the job done.

You’ll love it!! ;) magic

Righteous Kill

28 Sep

b

It is what you would expect from Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.

They’ve been doing these kind of roles for the past 30 years of their acting life.

The film itself was not a blast.

Totally predictable plot, stereotype good cop bad cop, drug dealers, bad neighborhood were huge minus to this movie.

Lack of character development made the film implausible and some parts inconvicible no matter how great the acting was.

Finally, the director’s abuse of dramatic music without much happening throughout the film slowly eats away your patience. ;)

Two veteran New York City detectives (De Niro and Pacino) work to identify the possible connection between a recent murder and a case they believe they solved years ago; is there a serial killer on the loose, and did they perhaps put the wrong person behind bars?

Daylight Robbery

27 Sep

I would think that this film has been overshadowed probably due to The Bank Job being released only a couple of months previous.

There’s a bunch of familiar faces from films such as Lock Stock, Snatch, The Business etc and even a bloke from Eastenders. Your usual cockney lot.

That being said the acting is spot on and the dialogue is funny.

Gotta love low budget British films, there’s a hell of a lot more of them recently and its a welcome change to the usual big budget yankee tosh. :P

It is just a basic stick-up job with lots of shouting and screams at the beginning, some ludicrous device about how to get money out of a City of London bank (Sure banks have with some 70 million have no motion detectors…) in the middle, and an OK third part where it all goes wrong.

have fun! ;) magic

The Death and Life of Bobby Z

25 Sep

80f1.jpg

The movie is not totally horrible, as action films go.

The main problem is the many plot holes in the narrative that the creators probably didn’t count on, or thought their viewers wouldn’t figure out how the whole mess was going to turn out.

John Herzfeld directed the screen play by Bob Krakower and Allan Lawrence.

The credibility gap is huge when the people involved asks us to accept things that don’t make too much sense.

Tim Kearney, a San Quentin prisoner with an “impulse control” problem, expects to spend the rest of his life in jail, until the FBI makes him an offer he can’t refuse.

He can go free if he agrees to assume the identity of the late drug lord, Bobby Z, so the Feds can deliver him to a Mexican kingpin in exchange for a kidnapped agent.

Boy A

23 Sep

Jack (Andrew Garfield) is released from prison, finally, at the age of 24 … having been institutionalized for most of his life.

He and another boy murdered a child, when they were themselves children.

When Jack is released from prison, with a necessary new identity, his counsellor Terry (Peter Mullan as a convincingly flawed mentor), believes so fully in his right to redemption, you can see Jack wanting and willing to believe him.

As the movie unfolds, Jack’s doubts continue to arise, through a series of episodes (drug use, a fight, trespassing) he finds it impossible to escape from his criminal past, despite a heroic rescue of a young girl trapped in a crashed car.
