Inception

13 Aug

Inception was filmed amazingly.

If Christopher Nolan doesn’t get Oscar nominations for his performance as a writer and/or as a director, we will be shocked.

The mere size of some of the effects is breathtaking.

However, Nolan keeps it down to earth with a very good cast and great storyline, as a film of this size has the potential of becoming a CGI-driven mess.

Nolan manages to avoid this completely, creating an almost perfect story which draws you in, and really leaves you thinking about the characters and the events which just transpired on-screen.

Dom Cobb is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable.

Cobb’s rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved.

Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption.

One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible-inception.

Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one.

screen

If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime.

But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move.

An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming.

Salt

07 Aug

This turned out to be one of those over-the-top but real decent thrill-ride type actioners.

Though there are those out there who just won’t cut Angelina Jolie a break, even the haters can’t deny that the girl can act.

She’s excellent in this film, about one of the CIA’s top interrogators who’s accused of being a Russian sleeper agent.

It’s fairly early in the film when the action begins and it runs and runs from there on.

There’s a good twist to plot much later on and we like movies that let you try to figure them out as they go along, rather than force feeding you the answers with dumbed down dialog and screechy music because the writers assume the audience is too stupid to get the obvious story movements.

This one doesn’t do that. :)

If you’re not a fan of crazy stunt sequences that no one (in reality) would come out of without broken bones, much less survive, then maybe you won’t enjoy this flick too much.

Otherwise, see it, it’s a blast, it’s got a good cast with Liev Schreiber (always excellent) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (ditto), and the storyline rips right along.

Check it out Today!.

As a CIA officer, Evelyn Salt swore an oath to duty, honor and country.

Her loyalty will be tested when a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy.

Salt goes on the run, using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture.

Salt’s efforts to prove her innocence only serve to cast doubt on her motives, as the hunt to uncover the truth behind her identity continues and the question remains: “Who is Salt?”

It’s also been dubbed as “The Bourne Salt-imatum” you heard it first here at et – the place to be.

How To Train Your Dragon

04 Aug

How to Train Your Dragon is probably the best Dreamworks picture we have ever seen.

If you didn’t know it was a Dreamworks picture, we wouldn’t be surprised if you thought it was a Pixar film.

This movie is almost as good as those amazing Pixar movies out there.

First off, let us say that you must watch this movie in 3D.

It’s not one of those movies that has 3D for the sake of it.

The visuals are absolutely stunning and a definite must see in 3D.

It’s not very predictable, it is enjoyable for both adults and young kids.

From the studio that brought you “Shrek,” “Madagascar” and “Kung Fu Panda” comes “How to Train Your Dragon.”

Set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, and based on the book by Cressida Cowell, the action comedy tells the story of Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t exactly fit in with his tribe’s longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers.

Hiccup’s world is turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges he and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view.

Warning: The Dragons may look a little scary to some younger kids.

All in all, the visuals are perfect.

Enjoy! ;) magic

Shutter Island

26 May

Shutter Island is a psychological thriller, starring Leonardo De Caprio as Teddy Daniels, that attacks our fears on an entire new level.

The overall dark tone and bleak state of mind we are in builds and builds, never letting go through out the movies entirety.

The film is thrilling, captivating, and most importantly, extremely entertaining.

Some have complained that they are dissatisfied with the ending and saw it coming from miles away.

Yes, you may think you know where it is going, that you anticipated the right turn when in arrived, but no one will be expecting the sudden left turn it makes in the films conclusion.

While Shutter Island was made by a true master of the film trade, one thing you will find unpleasantly delightful, is the director’s ability to genuinely creep you out in several terrifying scenes.

The film doesn’t rely on loud bags in the silence (although a few do occur, and will make you jump) but more on dark imagery and even darker dialogue that never lets up and brings the tension to a painfully disturbing level.

This one will not escape your thoughts so easily.

It’s 1954, and up-and-coming U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston’s Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital.

He’s been pushing for an assignment on the island for personal reasons, but before long he wonders whether he hasn’t been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister.

Teddy’s shrewd investigating skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open.

As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals “escape” in the confusion, and the puzzling, improbable clues multiply, Teddy begins to doubt everything …

MacGruber

23 May

Most of the people who are hating on this movie haven’t seen it yet, and are saying what others are saying

The bottom line is that it is very funny, with loads of crude jokes, language, situations and content.

If you like over the top humor, then this film is for you .

The movie stands on its own, with MacGruber rounding up a team to take on Dieter Von Cunth.

The hilarity ensues immediately, with joke after joke scoring big laughs.

Overall, very funny with great lines and very funny scenes yet just terrible effects.

It is one of the most hilarious comic produces of Hollywood.

Most people are apt to label it run of the mill stuff that Hollywood churns out mindlessly.

We’d recommend it for a lot of great laughs.

And before you go see this movie, don’t expect a plot, because it’s a based on Saturday Night Live, a spoof of the Secret Agent MacGyver;  a show watched by many way back in the 80’s. :P

Only one American hero has earned the rank of Green Beret, Navy SEAL and Army Ranger.

Just one operative has been awarded 16 purple hearts, 3 Congressional Medals of Honor and 7 presidential medals of bravery.

And only one guy is man enough to still sport a mullet.

In 2010, Will Forte brings Saturday Night Live’s clueless soldier of fortune to the big screen in the action comedy MacGruber.

Shrek Forever After

22 May

Shrek has gone down a cult film character… so has Donkey, Fiona and Puss in Boots, thanks to the film that these characters became such a craze.

Shrek was awesome, Sherk 2 was legendary, but the last one before this one ‘Shrek The Third’ wasn’t up to much.

Now comes ‘Shrek Forever After’, which ends the Shrek series.

The problem with ‘Shrek The Third’ and ‘Shrek Forever After’ are it’s script.

The writing is bland, you except a lot from Shrek, due to the wholesome entertainment we’ve witnessed before.

The Final Chapter has it’s share of funny and light moments, but they are far and between!

What saves this disappointment is it’s characters; Myers as Shrek is as good as ever! Diaz gives Fiona the voice she needs. Donkey and Puss-In Boots voiced by Icons like Murphy and Banderas are the life of the show.

They are funny and spot-on and then there’s Walt Dohrn as the evil-head Rumplestilskin who is just about okay.

View Trailer

Instead of scaring villagers away like he used to, a reluctant Shrek now agrees to autograph pitch forks.

Longing for the days when he felt like a real Ogre, Shrek is duped into signing a pact with the smooth-talking dealmaker, Rumpelstiltskin.

Shrek suddenly finds himself in a twisted, alternate version of Far Far Away, where Ogres are hunted, Rumpelstiltskin is king and Shrek and Fiona have never met.

Now, it’s up to Shrek to undo all he’s done in the hopes of saving his friends, restoring his world and reclaiming his one True Love.

Avatar

22 May

James Cameron returns and shows these wannabe rookie directors of recent times how it’s done.

Finally a good “old school” film that is worth remembering.

Last year was one of the weakest years in film-making that we can think of, even when extremely low quality films like Transformers 2, New Moon, and Wolverine are some of the biggest hits of the year, you know something is wrong.

Leave it up to Cameron to save the day with this fresh and unique cinematic experience. :P

The CGI makes the world of Pandora come alive, with lots of breathtaking scenery in the film.

The actors were good in their roles with Sam Worthington as Sully is effective in the leading role, we especially liked Stephen Lang in the role of Quaritch.

Thankfully the many millions of dollars spent on making Avatar were spent wisely – it is so much better than, hmm let’s say, Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen.

Overall Avatar is a good and entertaining science fiction epic. We recommend it. :)

Please excuse the trailer, it’s all that was available.

When Jake’s brother is killed in a robbery, he decides to take his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora.

There Jake learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge’s intentions of driving off the native humanoid “Na’vi” in order to mine for the precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland.

In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers intel for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by gung-ho Colonel Quaritch, while attempting to infiltrate the Na’vi people with the use of an “avatar” identity.

While Jake begins to bond with the native tribe and quickly falls in love with the beautiful alien Neytiri, the restless Colonel moves forward with his ruthless extermination tactics, forcing the soldier to take a stand – and fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora.

Balls Out: Gary the Tennis Coach

21 May

WWhen we first heard that Sean William Scott is in this movie, we thought that this would be like a tennis version of American Pie.

In most of his movies his role is meant to be a jerk, but this movie is different.

He plays “Never-been” tennis player and becomes a coach for the high school tennis team.

This movie contains a lot of one liners and that is what makes it so unique and funny.

But another unique thing about this movie is that it focuses on the small things.

The high school football team had a huge crowd, but the tennis team barely had an applause,  it didn’t even have more than 20 people in the crowd of its finals.

To conclude, we think this movie is quiet funny, but only to a specific audience. :)

View Trailer

Gary Houseman (Seann William Scott) is an overenthusiastic high school janitor who steps-up to lead the school’s loser tennis team to the state finals when the acting coach drops dead.

The brash and often insulting new coach is intent on inspiring these underdogs not only to win, but also to stand-up for themselves.

Although his coaching tactics may be unorthodox, including motivating his star player with a pre-game stripper, his heart is in the right place.

Besides, sometimes it takes big balls to play hard-ball.

House Broken

21 May

Here we have this beauty, it’s not popular going by ratings, however it’s not a total let down.

It’s got a really good cast, watch out for the neighbor she is just magic, she has a few tricks up her sleeve.

There is a good variety of characters keeping the film moving, especially when the parents go away; it will make you laugh and also make you think how much you do take your parents for granted or thanked them for putting up with our behavior in younger years! ;)

The film does have a point to put across, some other reviews have said it’s a mindless film with no concrete plot, take a look at it, Danny DeVito is back on the screen and is super in this.

ss

After 25 years with the fire department, Tom Cathcart (Danny DeVito) is determined to enjoy his retirement with his wife (Katey Segal) and will resort to anything, even kidnapping her,  to get his slobbish twenty-something, stay at home sons to move out of the house.

The Morgue

21 May

This is a nice horror flick, has an entertaining storyline, super camera work and photography.

The acting was awesome with nice twists.

The directing of the film was really good, and we always think music helps to set the mood.

If you’re looking for blood and exposed human organs, forget it.

The budget was really low, but they did pull it off and a cracking film.

Trapped between the physical world and the afterlife, between dusk and dawn; six strangers, brought together through a series of unusual events, are an enigma to themselves and go mysteriously unnoticed by others.

In their futile attempt for survival, they latch on to each other at a desolate mortuary in hopes of making it through the night.

There is an astonishing twist in this intense psychological thriller, more is happening at the Morgue than meets the eye. ooohh yeeahh! :)
