Friday 13th 2009

02 Jun

Friday the 13th has an incredibly powerful first 15-20 minutes.

It really kicks off with a bang.

Jason is back better than ever. :P

Then something goes fractionally wrong and we fall back into old territory.

Everything becomes a bit too familiar.

The main characters are strong in their performance without being memorable.

The cameos are the real scene stealers including a gas station attendant and a man named Donnie.

A lot of the jokes from all concerned really hit the mark though and are a nice touch to the film.

The Friday the 13th remake is what it is and at the end of the day probably all that could realistically have been hoped for.

It won’t decrease the seemingly ever growing hate of remakes, but it certainly won’t add to it either and that in itself is an achievement.

Searching for his missing sister, Clay heads up to the eerie woods of legendary Crystal Lake where he stumbles on the creaky remains of rotting old cabins that lie in wait behind moss-covered trees.

And that’s not the only thing hiding under the brush. Against the advice of police and cautions from the locals, Clay pursues what few leads he has with the help of a young woman he meets among a group of college kids up for an all-thrills weekend.

But they are about to find much more than they bargained for.

Nice!! ;)

The Mist

28 Nov

http://www.imageflux.net/uploads/851327perv.png

Let me take a breath… Never have I had such a visceral physical reaction to a film… ever.

In the last fifteen minutes I was nearly physically paralyzed, and then started shaking, realizing how numb my body was… and I am dead serious.

Frank Darabont’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novella goes heads above a 50s/60s monster movie homage.

This is grade “A” chilling, terrifying, unsettling and utterly hopeless cinema in line with the most cynical and depressing classics from the 70s.

The Mist itself and the monsters it brings are just the appetizer here. ;)

Following a violent thunderstorm, artist David Drayton and a small town community come under vicious attack from creatures prowling in a thick and unnatural mist.

Local rumors point to an experiment called the ‘The Arrowhead Project’ conducted at a nearby top-secret military base, but questions as to the origins of the deadly vapor are secondary to the group’s overall chances for survival.

Mirrors

27 Nov

This is a new horror it is totally magic, the direction of some scenes involving long dark corridors, doors slamming shut with pretty neat sound effects mixed with music all blends in.

One of the best horrors to be released so far! :)

Kiefier Sutherland is a ex NY cop battling sinister forces in mirrors that endanger both him and his family.

The movie opens with a terrified night watchman running for his life.

From what, we don’t know, until he begs forgiveness from a mirror for trying to escape.

The mirror cracks angrily in response . . .

Splinter

18 Nov

The acting is top quality.

All characters, especially the one portrayed by Shea, are portrayed exceptionally well.

The plot keeps you glued to your seat, and you can’t wait to see what happens next or how they will think of a way out of their predicament.

The only problems lie in the filming of the “monster” and to a lesser degree, the sound.

I’m not a personal fan of the “flicker” style of filming so it may work for others. ;)

My only gripe is the cinematography. :P

I can understand for artistic and probably budget reasons why the camera shakes.

It can be a bit disorienting at times, but it won’t give you a headache like the last two Bourne movies.

Also, I wish we could have seen more of the creature.

However, it is used effectively.

Our group consisting of a couple, a druggie, and a thug get trapped in an isolated gas station where a parasitic creature has entrapped them. Waiting to assimilate it’s prey alive.

The effects are pretty good for an independent feature. Not too much reliance on CGI which is good. The location filming served well too giving a raw and realistic look to the picture.

Eden Lake

09 Nov

The two adult leads are almost immediately plunged into a nightmare where children have the upper hand and where respect for adults is thrown out of the window yet the adults still view the amoral, feral youth as children (at least initially).

Eden Lake plays as virtually a documentary of Britain in 2008 and as a film gives us a stark reflection of what is happening in this country today.

The only difference being that Eden Lake takes place in the countryside while the real violence in the UK takes place on our city streets.

This is not the type of film to watch if your going on a first date with your girlfriend, contains shocking scenes of horror ;)

Like a bad dream turned worst nightmare, Eden Lake is a “relentlessly tense and immaculately paced” (Twitch Film) horror-thriller about modern youth gone wild.

When a young couple goes to a remote wooded lake for a romantic getaway, their quiet weekend is shattered by an aggressive group of local kids.

Dead Space: Downfall

09 Nov

posterThis is not Japanese so don’t expect some impressive “camera” (this is animation) movements but with pretty skilled use of CG here and there it manages to pull of some exciting stuff.

The story could of been a bit more elaborate, but they do throw in some details and explanations.

Horror fans will be pleased with the amount of gore and blood, but those expecting a solid intrigue and story will be left somewhat unsatisfied. ;)

I’m saying this not because it is confusing or bleak but because along the way it promises some nice twists and does not get into details, maybe due to the fact that the movie is pretty short. :P

have fun! ;) magic

Saw 5

26 Oct

Saw V

The Saw films have demonstrated an unfeasibly high success rate over time in terms of pulling off twist after twist and having them nearly all hit home.

With this track record, it seems inevitable that there’d be a significant stumble at some point.

They’ve never been bulletproof films (and thrillers are the genre that are hardest to bulletproof), but I’d say Saw V is definitely the stumble.

In spite of this, it still keeps in enough with the series in general for me to be ready for Saw VI in 2009 – which I hope will be better work. :P

Following Jigsaw’s grizzly demise, Mark Hoffman, the final apprentice to the serial killer is reigned a hero.

Agent Strahm is tested and puts the pieces together, Strahm realizes that Hoffman is helping Jigsaw, five seemingly unconnected people face a horrible lesson of teamwork.

The Signal

16 Oct

From time to time, I stumble across movies that I know nothing about, and under normal circumstances probably wouldn’t be that inclined to see.

Even though I’m a horror fan, low budget titles like this tend to slip through the net usually simply due to their lack of big name distribution. :P

Let’s hope that with “The Signal” however, this doesn’t happen.

Why? Because this movie is powerful, thoughtful and downright terrifying in its execution. ;)

It’™s New Year’s Eve in the city of Terminus and chaos is this year’€™s resolution.

All forms of communication have been jammed by an enigmatic transmission that preys on fear and desire driving everyone in the city to murder and madness.

oooohh yeeahhh!! ;) magic
