Gardens Of The Night

20 Mar

Relentlessly raw, authentic and sad: I hope that description doesn’t drive you away because it is also brilliantly directed and intensely human, and there is a loving relationship at the center that lights it all up like the sun. ;)

An 8-year-old girl is taken from her home and convinced that her family does not want her anymore.

After enduring 9 years of horror, she and her fellow victim are dumped by their captures.

enjoy! ;) magic

The Room At The End Of The Hall

15 Mar

Just about everything about Nightmare at the End of the Hall works, and works well.

Rue and McInnes Wood were great casting choices, with Kavan Smith, Sebastian Gacki, and Amber Borycki turning in capable and credible performances.

The lighting, locations, and sets lend to the overall mood of the film. ;) super!!

Courtney Snow (Sara Rue), an author with writer’s block, still haunted by the suicide of her best friend while they were in prep school, finds herself teaching at the very same school while trying to get back on her feet.

She encounters a young student, Laurel, who seems in every way to be the reincarnation of her best friend from years ago.

have fun and remember your munchies! ;) magic

Confessions of a Shopaholic

14 Mar

The actors were all terrific. The “chemistry” was there.

The storyline was interesting (not deep, somewhat predictable, but still pleasant and interesting). I laughed and smiled a lot throughout the film.

I even thought that the movie did a good job of showing why people are shopaholics and how this addiction is so dangerous.

The message was not so heavy as to detract from the feel-good angle of the movie, but it did try to display how ridiculous and shallow it is to be so defined by things.

You negative folks need to lighten up. Personally, I really enjoyed this movie! hehe :P

Street Fighter Legend of Chun Li

11 Mar

Kristen Kreuk managed to turn in the least sexy fighting heroine ever. She managed to make possibly the lamest all-girl dance scene ever committed to film.

She manages to dance whiter than Jimmy Stewart in It’s a Wonderful Life.

I’d have appreciated someone falling into a pool at some point in this flick. :P

As the Street Fighter saga celebrates its 20th anniversary, fight fans are invited to follow along with fearsome fighter Chun-Li (Smallville’s Kristin Kreuk) as she faces off against a series of formidable opponents in this feature adaptation of the popular video-game franchise directed by Exit Wounds’ Andrzej Bartkowiak.

Raul Julia was the best! (1990’s) ;) magic

Underworld Rise of the Lycans

03 Feb

http://www.releaselog.net/uploads/dacc778d8bf91d0d3fd4a7f66051ab80.jpgThe action in Underworld, though obviously restrained by a lower budget, is once again great.

There’s some nice dueling, the obvious gore and blood galore, and a nice Lord of the Rings style battle at the end. ;)

What it comes down to is that Underworld does nothing new, but does everything right in maintaining a steady river of entertainment.

I was never bored, and I don’t think you will be either.

The prequel story traces the origins of the centuries-old blood feud between the aristocratic vampires and their onetime slaves, the Lycans.

In the Dark Ages, a young Lycan named Lucian (Sheen) emerges as a powerful leader who rallies the werewolves to rise up against Viktor (Nighy), the cruel vampire king who has enslaved them.

City Of Ember

20 Nov

Easily the most impressive piece of the City of Ember puzzle is the delightfully ominous science-fiction visuals.

The massive sets were built in Northern Ireland in the shipyard-turned-soundstage of the location the Titanic was actually constructed in (now the largest soundstage in the world) and it’s never more apparent than in the beautiful crane shots through the underground city.

The CG elements are also top-notch, but the practical effects flawlessly immerse the audience in the fantasy world of pipeworks and generators.

For generations, the people of the City of Ember have flourished in an amazing world of glittering lights.

But Ember’s once powerful generator is failing … and the great lamps that illuminate the city are starting to flicker. Something needs done.

enjoy! ;) magic

The Secret Life of Bees

19 Oct

In the midst of the civil rights movement, Rosaleen finds herself in some trouble with the locals, inspiring Lily to flee with her to a South Carolina town that she believes holds the secret to her mother’s past.

In this town, they find refuge with the Boatwright sisters (Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys and Sophie Okonedo), who take them in on the strength of a story concocted by Lily.

Through their cultured world, filled with beekeeping, a lucrative honey business, religious beliefs and love, Lily finds the security she has longed for and finds the answers to questions that haunted her for years.

The film has its flaws. It dragged for a good portion of the first thirty minutes as we watch Lily and Rosaleen mill about, doing mundane things in their pitiful lives.

But then it really picks up when they meet the Boatwright sisters. :)
