The Book Of Eli

27 May

The Hughes Brothers, directors of From Hell and Menace II Society among others, have created an interesting and thoughtful action movie, that also carries a message of faith and hope.

The action set-pieces are well handled, and the photography of the movie, is very well done.

While the setting itself isn’t particularly new, along similar lines to Mad Max and other movies of this kind, they still get some pretty impressive visuals.

They are also helped by having two of the best actors around in this movie.

Denzel Washington carries the movie easily and is also very convincing in the action sequences.

Gary Oldman as Carnegie gives a performance more in line with some earlier work, such as Leon than some recent performances but he is always worth watching.

The rest of the cast, led by Mila Kunis all give good support.

Eli (Denzel Washington) has been on a journey for 30 years, walking west across America after a cataclysmic war that turned the earth into a total wasteland.

The world has become a lawless civilization where people must kill or be killed.

The barren roads belong to gangs of cutthroats who rob and kill for water, a pair of shoes, a lighter, or just for fun.

Eli is a peaceful man who only acts in self defense, and becomes a warrior with unbelievable killing skills when he is challenged.

The Mist

28 Nov

http://www.imageflux.net/uploads/851327perv.png

Let me take a breath… Never have I had such a visceral physical reaction to a film… ever.

In the last fifteen minutes I was nearly physically paralyzed, and then started shaking, realizing how numb my body was… and I am dead serious.

Frank Darabont’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novella goes heads above a 50s/60s monster movie homage.

This is grade “A” chilling, terrifying, unsettling and utterly hopeless cinema in line with the most cynical and depressing classics from the 70s.

The Mist itself and the monsters it brings are just the appetizer here. ;)

Following a violent thunderstorm, artist David Drayton and a small town community come under vicious attack from creatures prowling in a thick and unnatural mist.

Local rumors point to an experiment called the ‘The Arrowhead Project’ conducted at a nearby top-secret military base, but questions as to the origins of the deadly vapor are secondary to the group’s overall chances for survival.

Mirrors

27 Nov

This is a new horror it is totally magic, the direction of some scenes involving long dark corridors, doors slamming shut with pretty neat sound effects mixed with music all blends in.

One of the best horrors to be released so far! :)

Kiefier Sutherland is a ex NY cop battling sinister forces in mirrors that endanger both him and his family.

The movie opens with a terrified night watchman running for his life.

From what, we don’t know, until he begs forgiveness from a mirror for trying to escape.

The mirror cracks angrily in response . . .

Twilight

22 Nov

Surprisingly, Twilight wasn’t that bad of a film.

I expected it to be much worse, it’s hard to make a convincing film – they had to over act looks to try and communicate without many words.

Edward falls in love with Bella but knows the further they progress in their relationship the more he is putting Bella and those close to her at risk.

Edward warns Bella that she should leave him but she refuses to listen and to understand why he is saying this.

The Governors Wife

19 Nov

The movie is very predictable to the extent that the viewer can clearly differentiate the “good guys and the bad guys” within the first few minutes.

But, that is not important.

This thriller is more fun than anything and it is basically just an easy way to pass the time when you want to veg out.

Quantum of Solace

11 Nov

After the critically acclaimed and much successful ‘Casino Royale’ I had hopes that ‘Quantum of Solace’ could rival this years best movie so far: ‘The Dark Knight’.

Well… it doesn’t even come close. :P

There use to be a time when Bond movies where trendsetting…

On paper Quantum of Solace may be a Bond movie.

But many of those things that people use to associate with Bond movies are gone.

And what’s up with this new style of filming and editing?

Quantum of Solace’ continues the high octane adventures of James Bond from ‘Casino Royale’.

Picking up literally days where the previous film left off, after being betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal.

Eden Lake

09 Nov

The two adult leads are almost immediately plunged into a nightmare where children have the upper hand and where respect for adults is thrown out of the window yet the adults still view the amoral, feral youth as children (at least initially).

Eden Lake plays as virtually a documentary of Britain in 2008 and as a film gives us a stark reflection of what is happening in this country today.

The only difference being that Eden Lake takes place in the countryside while the real violence in the UK takes place on our city streets.

This is not the type of film to watch if your going on a first date with your girlfriend, contains shocking scenes of horror ;)

Like a bad dream turned worst nightmare, Eden Lake is a “relentlessly tense and immaculately paced” (Twitch Film) horror-thriller about modern youth gone wild.

When a young couple goes to a remote wooded lake for a romantic getaway, their quiet weekend is shattered by an aggressive group of local kids.

Taken

09 Nov

The most thrilling movie I’ve seen in a long time.

Neeson is what we would fear if James Bond went to hell and came back for revenge (I doubt big budget Quantum of Solace will top this). :P

I loved Jason Bourne; but where Bourne is confused for half the movie, Neeson is looking down a barrel of a pistol 3/4 of the time.

In a three way spy battle, I would put Neeson edging out Bourne, who would be a step ahead of Bond.

Between the jaw-dropping action sequences was the subject matter of international trafficking, which was pretty miserable to watch.

An ex-soldier (Liam Neeson) traveling through Europe embarks on a frantic quest to rescue his daughter (Maggie Grace) after the young girl is abducted by slave traders in District B13 director Pierre Morel’s contemporary thriller Taken.

The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian

05 Nov

The film moves along at a steady, exciting pace, with skillfully staged action and suspense that will have audience members on the edge of their seats

In general it stays very faithful to the source material, there is quite a bit of added embellishment to make for a grander and more spectacular epic, with added battle and chase sequences that are deftly handled and add to the story and the level of excitement, where in less skilled hands they could have easily overtaken it.

The level of action, and violence, is really quite a bit stronger than in the first film, and the film has a darker, grittier tone, which makes it something of a surprise that the filmmakers got away with a PG rating :P

A year after their first adventure in Narnia, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy are pulled back in by Susan’s magic horn.

They find that hundreds of years have passed, and Narnia is now ruled by the bloodthirsty General Miraz, uncle to the true heir, Prince Caspian, now in exile.

Illegal Tender

01 Nov

Good little action thriller from John Singleton.

I don’t know what else to say but this is an old school style crime thriller that has characters you care about and real tension that comes from the characters and situations.

Definitely worth a look at some point. :P

Wilson DeLeon, Jr. (Rick Gonzalez) is an exceptional college student with an adoring girlfriend, doting mother and a future full of promise.

He has never wanted for anything, and he has never been forced to stand his ground.

But when ghosts from his mother’s past come back to haunt his present, he must defend his family.
