Reservation Road

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Astounding.

Impeccably crafted drama.

The story is sad and very serious, but this is one of the most perfect examples of the art of simple dramatic film-making that exists.

This is film storytelling at its pinnacle, on a scale of four stars, this is a five star movie.

On a warm September evening, college professor Ethan Learner, his wife Grace, and their daughter Emma are attending a recital.

Their 10-year-old son Josh is playing cello — as usual.

His younger sister looks up to him, and his parents are proud of their son.

On the way home, they all stop at a gas station on Reservation Road.

There, in one terrible instant, he is taken from them forever.

Red

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Don’t mistake Red for lesser fare such as Death Wish or The Brave One.

While it is constructed around a fairly simple premise that on the surface appears primed to appeal to the base human desire for revenge, the story here is so much more than that, and to give it short shrift and dismiss it as mere manipulative movie making would be to miss out on a story and performance that is a true must see. :)

Red is a 2008 dramatic thriller about a couple of kids who kill a dog named ‘Red’ to amuse themselves.

The owner finds out who they are, and tries to bring them to justice by informing the authorities.

Transsiberian

b

Brad Anderson is probably the best unknown director working today.

He’s the independent Christopher Nolan, often making character-driven, psychologically complex flicks that transcend the trappings of their respective genres.

The movie opens in Moscow, where we see police detective Grinko, Ben Kingsley, investigating a double murder of two gangsters.

A big stash of bad drugs is also missing. Hmmm.

Transsiberian an uncommonly absorbing experience.

One of those legendary train trips that people used to dream about taking, the Transsiberian Express has probably seen better days.

An American couple, Roy (Woody Harrelson) and Jessie (Emily Mortimer), decide to return home the long way from their recent sojourn in Pekin and meet another couple from the West.

MAX Payne

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

mid1

As an adaptation, the Max Payne film is very different from the game in pretty much every aspect besides the tone and the characterizations.

I found it to be the dark and effective thriller that the game was.

A brooding performance from Wahlberg and a matching score only add to the film.

Stunning visuals, engineered by the fictional hallucinogenic drug in the film, in addition to the dark cinematography, steal attention away from the fact that the film’s editing is … eh well :) .

Coming together to solve a series of murders in New York City are a DEA agent (Wahlberg) whose family was slain as part of a conspiracy and an assassin (Kunis) out to avenge her sister’s death.

The duo will be hunted by the police, the mob, and a ruthless corporation.

The Signal

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

From time to time, I stumble across movies that I know nothing about, and under normal circumstances probably wouldn’t be that inclined to see.

Even though I’m a horror fan, low budget titles like this tend to slip through the net usually simply due to their lack of big name distribution. :P

Let’s hope that with “The Signal” however, this doesn’t happen.

Why? Because this movie is powerful, thoughtful and downright terrifying in its execution. ;)

It’™s New Year’s Eve in the city of Terminus and chaos is this year’€™s resolution.

All forms of communication have been jammed by an enigmatic transmission that preys on fear and desire driving everyone in the city to murder and madness.

Journey To The Center Of The Earth

He has a knack for these adventure movies as he has in the Mummy movies, and the kid who plays his nephew Sean link up for family time to uncover some of the mysteries of the notes Seans father left in his journey to find a Lost land.

They decipher the notes and their adventure takes them to Iceland where they meet the other member of this trilogy a mountain climber who has the energy and smile to melt any glacier and keep up with the boys.

Quarantine

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

As far as horror movies go, I have to place this one pretty high on the list.

I do love a good horror movie, there are so many more elements that play into making a scary movie than blood, guts, and a little profanity in order to make it a good one.

This one has suspense up the wazoo, blood, guts, and a candor that is rarely seen in the horror genre these days. This movie looked exhausting to make.

I think a few of these actors, particularly Jennifer Carpenter, got a loooong nights’ sleep after wrapping the film.

I got exhausted just watching them freak out. :)

If you’re looking for something that will make you cringe, jump, and possibly squeal, look no further.

This one has just a little something for everyone.

Television reporter Angela Vidal (Carpenter) and her cameraman (Harris) are assigned to spend the night shift with a Los Angeles Fire Station.

After a routine 911 call takes them to a small apartment building, they find police officers already on the scene in response to blood curdling screams coming from one of the apartment units.

Body Of Lies

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Russel Crowe may have packed on 50 pounds for his part, yet his performance feels extremely blah.

He speaks everything in the same meandering drawl, which may have been the point, but his character disappears for such lengthy bits, we tend to forget about him.

The promised pairing of him and Dicaprio is weightless; their scenes have no fire or bite.

Roger Ferris, Leonardo DiCaprio, is a CIA covert operative working in Jordan searching for terrorists who have been bombing civilian targets.

Ferris uncovers information on the Islamist mastermind Al-Saleem (Alon Aboutboul).

He devises a plan to infiltrate Al-Saleem’s terrorist network with the help of his boss back in Langley, Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe).

The Strangers

The Strangers

The tension buildup during the movie is incredible.

Some of the scenes are disturbing but not overly gory.

Liv Tyler does a convincing job of making you feel the fright and a lot of the acting is non-verbal.

Scott Speedman also does an excellent and believable job.

With todays crazy headlines, this is the kind of movie that you can actually imagine happening somewhere in this country in real life.

Trust me, at the end of this movie you will be double checking the locks on your doors and windows. :P

After returning from a wedding reception, a couple staying in an isolated vacation house receive a knock on the door in the mid-hours of the night.

What ensues is a violent invasion by three strangers, their faces hidden behind masks.

The couple find themselves in a violent struggle, in which they go beyond what either of them thought capable in order to survive.
