New Windows 7 64 bit

11 Jul

While Windows Vista (launched in early 2007) addressed a number of Window’s XP’s biggest issues, most notably a much needed security refresh, Microsoft’s most current operating system (OS) came with its own string of new headaches, like incessant pop-ups and some frustrating incompatibilities (not to mention its own set of flaws).

Despite what those Mac vs. PC commercials might say, Microsoft has been listening, and its answer is Windows 7.

It recently gave a preview version to a number of early-access developers and journalists, so let’s run down some of the highlights of their early impressions of this OS that could still be several years away.

Improved User Interface
– Vista looks a lot like XP, an important thing for ease of transition from one operating system to the next.

So, naturally, Windows 7 will look an awful lot like Vista, but, that’s not to say that it won’t deliver a number of important additions, perhaps the biggest being a series of “gestures” that will interpret your mouse hovering over something as an indication that you’d like to see more information about it.

For those who didn’t know Windows is based on the original WIMP used on RISC OS machines which powered Archimedes machines, I know – I had one :D

WIMP was what was displayed “Windows, Icons, Menu and Pointer” i think.

In response to user feedback, its been reported that Microsoft has made numerous changes to the Windows 7 user interface as they ready the operating system viewed by many as a make or break product for the software maker.

Microsoft also made changes to alerts that signal when an application needs attention.

The icon for a so-called “needy” application will now flash up to seven times, as opposed to the previous three.

Other changes also include a more noticeable flashing animation in a bolder color of orange.

Additional changes include modifications to the taskbar pane that allow it to display a greater number of application icons, a change that makes it easier for users to pin new apps to the taskbar, and more flexible icon and gadget view options.

Microsoft needs Windows 7 to be a hit. :)

Windows 7 (Mobile)

01 Mar

Unsurprisingly, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has said that the 7th iteration of Microsoft’s popular mobile OS will be released to manufacturing next year.

Microsoft told ET that Windows Mobile will get more and more shared technology with Windows, bringing in technology such as, “browsers, presentation services, and even, in the future, the kernel, and that the amount of shared technology will only increase over time.”

Lastly, Microsoft confirmed that the corporation will not be producing a Microsoft Phone, but only sticking to the phone operating systems.

Windows XP Licenses – extension

23 Jan

Originally Microsoft had given Windows XP OEM licenses until 31st January 2009 however – Microsoft have eased off and renewed the deadline for OEM distributors to make Windows XP OEM licenses available up until 31st December 2009.

This is  yet another sign of the market’s resistance to Windows Vista, and of the growing realization within the channel that many customers have decided to simply skip Vista and wait for the arrival of Windows 7.

Microsoft says that should be ready for late 2009 or early 2010, but some reports have suggested it could come as early as mid-2009.

Good news all round ;) magic

Windows XP

10 Nov

Well Microsoft’s newest tactic is going to make Vista look pretty bad.

The apparent decision to allow OEM computer sellers to offer disks that downgrade installations of Windows Vista to XP until the end of July 2009 clearly bumps up against the period when Windows 7 might be released.

Originally the deadline was January 2009.

Long Live XP! ;) magic

Windows 7

10 Nov

Check this, this here is Windows 7, the successor of Windows Vista.

At first glance, Windows 7 maintains the streamlined look of Vista, but appears more muted — even Windows XP-like.

Mostly, Microsoft seems to be focusing more on functionality, possibly in a bid to put some distance between Windows 7 and the criticisms which have dogged Vista.

Microsoft seemed to have listened to the criticisms and have fine tuned Windows Graphical experience and other features.

The official release of Windows 7 should be next year.

Microsoft News

06 Feb

Here’s a piece of information we came accross, Microsoft have confirmed that the Vista service pack 1 won’t be available for download until march.

During beta testing for Vista service pack 1, Microsoft found that some device drivers were causing problems on some systems with service pack 1 installed.

Although the issues can be fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, Microsoft decided this would be too complicated for most users.

So Microsoft are spending from now until March fixing drivers that are causing problems, and we have also learned that Microsoft have given OEM’s the disk images based on Vista service pack 1, so they can build their machines on the new service pack 1 format.

Microsoft have also started producing Vista service pack 1 on DVD for volume licensing.

Vista should be more stable after the service pack is installed. Wait and see ;)

Commodore Return – Update #2

13 Jan

Commodore (back after 25 years) Update…

Earlier on in 2007 Commodore announced they were coming back in the form of PC systems!

Well I can now say that Commodore have been selling their new machines, they run Windows Vista 64-bit version.

Its cool how in 1980’s it was 8-bit C64 in 2008 its 64-bit Commodore PC

Here’s a review from Commodore website:

Pros Excellent spec for gamers. Loads of stylish skins to choose from. It says Commodore on it

Cons Costs as much as 11 Xbox 360s

After dominating ’80s home computing with the C64 and Amiga, Commodore died a horrible, slow death in the ’90s. But now the brand has been revived for a range of Windows PCs aimed at gamers. Prices start at £1000 for the entry-level G model, rising through the GS and GX to the top-of-the-range XX, tested here.

When is a Commodore not a Commodore?
You might be wondering what’s so Commodorey about a PC that’s specced (as these machines inevitably are) with components from numerous different companies. Times have changed since computer manufacturers made their own bespoke hardware, and yes, in many ways the XX is just another PC.

In fact, you could say the Commodore connection is only ‘C-Kin’ deep. C-Kins are Commodore’s own custom case design decals that can be added and removed to suit your mood, new wallpaper or fashion leanings, and it’s these above anything else that mark out the Commodore range from the competition.
